Hi I'm about to start looking for my first caravan I'm looking to spend around the 3k mark and just wanted so advice on what to look for and the the best way for checking damp. Any advice greatly appreciate
Thanks Simon
Hi Simon,
I am not a caravan buff ,but same applies on motorhomes.
First of all invest in a good damp meter (approx £20).
Definitely check the floor for delamination ,ie lifting or softness, especially around the door areas.
Make sure you put the meter in all the overhead lockers
and around windows doors etc.
Most importantly ,after reading some of the horror posts on here lately ,take someone with you who knows what they are about. You will not beat experience.
No need to go in damp meter waving ,but if they have nothing to hide they won't mind you using it.
Good luck.
Greg

Whether buying privately or from a dealer, before agreeing to purchase one, have it checked over by a mobile service engineer. If seller does not agree to this, steer well clear. This action could well save you lots of money in future repair bills.
i do not have a damp meter but 3 or 4 times a year i look under rubber seals round windows.Easy to lift from inside the van with window open If i did find any damp its not too late for an easy fix.
Have a look at the tyres especially the dates on them. If they are 5 years old or more then these will need replacing straight away which will set you back over a hundred quid for starters. If it's a dealer purchase they should replace them after your inspection but a private sale is quite often 'sold as seen' so a dealer purchase provides more protection regarding consumer protection etc.
