Hi we have a recently bought a converted camper van, the fridge works ok but every now and again it starts making a loud whirring noise. Is this normal? I thought it might be the fridge getting too hot and cooling down, it sometimes does it after I have had the oven on.

Just wondered if this is normal or should I be getting rid of it.

As the camper van has been converted, does it have fridge vents on the outside for cooling of the fridge?

It probably won't make any difference but have you tried operating the fridge by both gas and electric?
Just a thought in ruling out the possibilities as it gets colder by gas and may perform better after the oven has been used.

Hello
I can't seem to get it working by gas. We have used it on 240V.

It gets cold but it's the noise it makes, even during the night. Had to switch it off the other night as we couldn't sleep with the noise and were conscious others might be able to hear it.

Just worried that it might be on it's way out or need looking at.

Could it be a cooling fan? Fans are not standard fitting on fridge installations but if better ventilation of the fridge is required it is possible to fit a fan which comes on when the fridge gets too hot to work efficiently. If you have a look through the external vent you may be able to see a fan.

Are you sure it's a 3way absorption fridge & not a domestic type compressor fridge?

That is a good point Opensauce, but the compressor fridge I had in my boat was very quiet and didn't even come on very often if the door hadn't been opened recently.

However, there is no way a compressor fridge can work on gas, and it sounds like Mrshotrod has tried to get it working, which suggests that the facility to do so is there but not working.

Sounds like a cooling fan to me. Is that the sort of noise Mrs Hotrod.

If so you may feel increased air flow when its on

It is definitely a 3 way fridge. Not sure if it's an absorption or compressor type though. Don't know what the difference is.

The noise sounds like a fan but it is very loud, which is what is bothering me. Don't want it to explode on me!!!!

Hmmm Fridges should have two vents, one below the cooling fins, and the other above them, so that cool air is drawn in by the lower one, as warm vents out of the top.

As this is a conversion, I wonder if warm air is being expelled via a fan kit? These have a sensor attached to the rear of the fridge, so that if the fridge coolant temperature rises above a given limit the fan kicks in, which seems to fit with having had the oven on.

Such fans are 12v computer fans, and get noisy just like those on a PC, so easily replaceable at low cost. As for gas, maybe it was never connected? There should be a gas manifold, usually in a kitchen cupboard, with isolation valves for each appliance. Check if there a gas line from the fridge tap (and that the tap is on)

If its definitely a 3 way fridge, then its definitely not a compressor type. They can only be run on electric, and sound like the one you have at home. Absorbtion fridges are usually silent, but some may have a fan as has been suggested.

If it has a fan it will be behind one of the fridge vents on outside of van. If the fan is there you can pull one of the cable connectors off to prevent fan from running. A noisy fan can be as simple as the blades contacting casing & just bending casing very slightly to prevent blades hitting will silence it.
