jTQU I've just checked the engineers site and chassis services are listed separately to a full service - do you think that means he wouldn't have picked up the issues or would you still be worried ?

Full service includes chassis service. Chassis service on it's own does not include check of interior appliances. Around the date of your caravan, '93 they were changing from the old type bearings to sealed bearings & it is more difficult to check if sealed bearings are about to fail so not necessarily fault of serviceman.

I presume you are getting caravan fixed so get both wheel bearings replaced & brake linings as well & you are good to go any distance.

If you are able to jack up caravan its not a bad idea between trips to jack each wheel off ground & spin the wheel. It should run freely. If you grasp tyre each side & try to rock wheel from side to side there should be none or barely discernible play. Also you should check wheelnuts are tight before trips.

Al-Ko instruct on their caravan chassis courses that wheel hubs be taken off to clean dust from the brake items housed within the hub. If as stated the bearing are opposed conical roller bearings then the critical "tracks" of the bearings are exposed.

If the bearings are not opposed conical rollers but a later type which is a sealed double ball bearing assembly, then these cannot be visually checked. If the service invoice includes the cost of two "one-shot" nuts then you have the later sealed type of bearing as these nuts must be replaced during a service.

Thanks both, yes we have booked for repairs and planned to say that we need it ready for a distance run in October so this advice is very helpful.
