I dont know if someone out there can help me quite urgently, we are due to take the kids on holiday this friday and on checking the van, the electric heater is not working. i put a meter on the input terminal of the circuit board on the rear of the heater and there is 240v there, the fan part is working, but when I went to turn the control on the green light flickered and went out. I understand that there is supposed to be a fuse somewhere between the fire and the main trip switch, I have traced the wires back and cant find one, but then if this had gone there would not be power at the unit so i cant see its that. I cannot hear any clicking on the relays? i also cannot find a trip switch that I have heard mentioned. i have tried switching off the mains to see if that will reset anything, but no luck. I dont know what else to check, or how to check. its for an Avondale Rialto 640-6 2003 model. any advice or questions would be appreciated. thanks.
Sounds like it is the element itself that may have gone. - However the weather is good at the moment so you should not need a heater. If you still want one - buy a small oil filled rad as a temporary measure.
(I assume you are talking about the room heater and not the water heater)

Hi Avon Eagle, yes I am talking about the room heater. I thought it might be the element and still might be, but I did run a meter on it and although I by no means know what I am doing, there seems to be a reading which I would not have expected if there was a break?
We have the little oil rad (thanks) but would still like to fix it at some point.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on either what I can check or how to check different components, if I can discover which part is the faulty one I can order a new one.
What did you have the meter on when you took the reading ?
If it was ohms - did you completely disconnect one side of the element ?
If it was on volts - there should be 230volts one side and only a few or zero on the other side.
However - The volts method would not tell you if the element is ok. Only the ohms (resistance) will. I think it should be a few thousand ohms. Perhaps less but not zero or open circuit.
I had it on ohms but no I didn't disconnect it. I have had to reassemble it now so that we can at least have gas heating while away, will will disconnect and try again once back. Thanks for your help.
Sound like exactly the same symptoms I had when I picked up my Avondale 556 last year. When checking the van out before taking delivery, when I turned on the electric heating at the controller on the rear bunk, the green light flickered, went out and the electric heating was not working although the fan worked. The controller just seemed dead. Heating worked fine on gas.
I'm pretty sure it was something to do with the controller itself mounted on the rear bunk, the dealer never explained what even though I asked, but it was not in the heating unit itself. I would start at the controller. Sorry I can't help more.

Are you sure the temperature control inside the control switch has not moved. Our dog sometimes lays in the corner where it is and moves it and we have no heating. You should hear the fire click as you turn the temperature up.
Hi everyone, thanks for your reply's, we are away in Devon now, we still don't have the electric, I am sure it's not the temp setting Taylor56, but thank you. It could be the controller swaggy but not sure how to test it, maybe when I am back I will try to disconnect it and run a meter on it, but I can only test the circuit if it comes on and off. Some sun here in Devon, enjoying the break.
