We live in Spain but have a caravan in England. This year I booked 6 or 7 campsites In the UK for the summer. Then Brittany Ferries cancelled our ferry, so we had to drive through France instead of getting the ferry from Spain. My sister died, so we had to go to the funeral. And that was just the start of our problems. I got all upset about Brexit and wanted to leave Scotland to see what had happened in England, so we cut short our stay in Scotland and went to some campsites we had not planned to visit. No problem there.
I'm thinking it would be better not to book in future. What do you think? Do you always book? I found it quite liberating going unannounced to different campsites. We were turned away once, so we just went to another campsite further down the road.
We always book, but in low season can leave it up to 24 hours prior to arrival. We like EHU and as we aren't touring are happy to know we have somewhere to stay.

Years ago we used to like visiting several different sites during a two-week period. We often didn't even know where were going until we got in the car! Once we had decided, we used to find a phone box and ring up a few (no mobile phones in those days). We only ever booked 1 or 2 nights then decided whether we wanted to stay longer when we got there. When we decided to move on, we just rang ahead and booked somewhere.
These days we are not quite so "adventurous" and tend to book ahead. We have a week booked next month. Being retired now we tend to avoid peak season.

We too are retired and avoid the high season in Spain - too hot and too noisy - but the UK is always cooler than Spain and normally quieter too.
In 2017 our holiday in the UK will be partly in August and partly in September. We don't tend to like the same campsites as families with children and generally find sites which are not so busy and not so expensive, although all UK campsites are more expensive than those in Spain, Portugal and France. The facilities are also better on the continent too but we don't like the heat in August.
This year I lost my deposit on a few campsites in England, so I am not too sure if booking in advance is a good idea. Also the less popular campsites are normally less crowded and we prefer no-frills camping.
If you join the caravan club or the camping and caravanning club they have a vast network of 5 van sites which cost anything between £8 and £15 a night, most have EHU, some have sanitary facilities some dont. This might be an option for you to think about. Membership to each club is around £40 a year. J x
