Hi there I recently purchased my 1st caravan a 1991 mardon dalesman 460/2.im not really clued up on them but looking forward to getting away on a few breaks around Scotland with the mrs and kid who are super excited. Anyway I connected the battery turned the switch on that is located above the kitchen sink area switched it to caravan and the lights came on inside and power was supplied from the battery greay start lol . Then when I connected the outside mains wire to my the generator which should have supplied power to the caravan but nothing seemed to being going through..? I checked the wire its self and everything was good and proper then I checked the connection on the side of the caravan and all wires where correct aswell now this is as far as I'm willing and able to go with electrics as I dnt want to cause any more problem.. there was also an issue with the blue water pump hose that connects outside for my water I submerged it in the water tank and all sounded good pump was working thought great turned the furthest away tap on which is the sink waited and waited and waited but no water came through...?not sure if there is a stop valve I need to turn on or if somethings broken as I says not really clued up on them tried searching but nothing as yet so thought it would be good idea to join and ask some people who know..the gas seems to work as i have turned that on and I can ignite my cooker rings not sure on how the fridge or heater works through the gas there is a switch on the fridge gathering u switch this on.... any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance to anyone...the van itself is in good nick for its age needs a few silly things like some waste hose for the outlets Y piece and wastewater barrell , few window stays already replaced carpet in seating area and lino in the kitchen area nothing major things that should be easily sourced I'm hoping..jst not sure how who or what to do next guys....any info on the above or how the appliances work aswell would be great..

Thanks paul

Did you start the generator up before plugging in the EHU cable?
The advice is to do this as the electrical current from the generator has so called spikes in the flow which can cause damage to electrical equipment and to unplug the cable FIRST before switching off the Gennie. Even with the the modern sine wave technology such as the Honda generators the advice is still the same.
Is the Gennie pushing out any power?
Plug in a table lamp and check for power first.

So 12 volt works fine and carried on working when you connected mains from generator.

So only problem is getting power from your generator, is that right. (other than water pump and gas etc).

Is the generator 230 or 240 volt and not 12 volt.
There should be a main breaker unit or consumer unit in the van. All switches on this should be up if that is the n position. The main switch on this should have a push to test button and a reset button. Have you tried this.

Yeah tango55 the generator was started prior to me plugging in the mains..there was also power from the gennie as my brother runs his own car valeting buisness so had a few appliances around..the caravan definitely gets power when the battery is attached as the caravan lights come on and the master control facia panel lights green...does my battery need to be connected when I have the EHU in or can it be left disconnected ..? May be the actual fuse box itself..?? I will try and upload a few pictures of the facia and fuse box to see if this helps .. Raring to go but don't want to go and end up with problems at the site and ruin the break..thanks for the responses .

What does the EHU run everything ..??or do you need the combination of battery and EHU can you just have battery power alone or EHU alone....yeah ive have the small white breaker unit as you say in my storage cupboard all switches where pushed up and in correct position when I did press the test button nothing seemed to happen the control facia panel still was lit green and the the lights stayed on is this correct..? If you pushed the test button and nothing happened that normally indicates that there is no incoming 230V supply.

Some trip switches can look like they are in the right position when they are in fact tripped. It is often worth switching them off and on again. This resets them.

I agree with saxo1. Pushing the test button should cause the unit to trip, so if it doesn't, maybe its already tripped? Worth a try.

Best Regards,
Colin

Water supply: The vans system may have been drained down, so you need to locate the drain tap to ensure it is closed before filling. Look under the van near the boiler to spot the drain. The hot water boiler will take quite a lot so you will need to be patient, however, you should hear some gurgling from the taps as air is expelled.

Battery: This should be left connected. The power supply unit may not be able to supply sufficient power to run the 12v system on its own and trip out.

Mains: as per the suggestions

The EHU runs any 13amp sockets in the van, any mains lights (you may have a couple), fridge and any other mains equipment such as water heater, space heater and charges the battery via a charger unit.

The battery runs 12volt lights, pump, maybe water heater controls on gas similarly space heater and fridge but maybe not. The battery will not power mains equipment but may power the control circuitry of items on gas or mains power.

Anything the battery runs will run irrespective of the EHU being present or working as long as there is charge in the battery. The mains charger unit may run things without the battery being present but really only if it is designed to do so. Some are some aren't.
