opinions please. have decided that it maybe wiser to buy an older cheap van for 6 mnths to see if its for us, thinking of around 1000 to 2000, apart from the obvious damp issues what else should we look out for also private or trade in from a dealer.

Buy private off ebay auction etc. Preferably a caravan for sale by owner who has used it & looked after it, not a dealer. You will need to budget for chassis service, any extra parts required & probably new tyres. Prices will be dropping now as season is ending so good time to buy.

If you only want it for 6mths then sell it next spring & you may make a profit but then you will need to buy a newer 'van when everybody else wants one so it might be better to get a year out of it, sell next Autumn & get a newer 'van then.

Opensauce has it on the nose. Try Ebay and look for a caravan where people are selling up - a good chance you'll get aquarolls/awnings and much else thrown in. Then if you don't like it you can apss it on with minimal or no loss.

Word of mouth is the best option. Spread the word and you may get someone that bought one and its sitting unused.

We bought our 1990 Abi Marauder off Gumtree for £375 with all sorts of stuff:

Microwave.
Cascade 2 Water Heater.
Rivera Gas Heater
Battery Charger. (Now replaced)
Thetford 465 Porta. (Now converted to manual from electric)
Harrison Awning. plus spare wheel etc....

Last owner had it 12 years and looked after it, not without issues but easy to sort out, we don't use it much so didn't want to spend loads and think we got lucky but they are out there....

we bought ours from a dealer. We`d been looking for a cheap van, around £2.5k, and all we saw looked and smelt decrepid. Offputting. On the way out, we spotted one which had been vrought in as p/ex. An ABI Daystar Prestige, so we went in it. Tipped it up at the back (no steadies down) but it wasn`t damp, smelt like it`d been looked after.
WE bought it, £600. THat was 5 years ago, and she`s still rumbling along.

I'd recommend investing in a damp meter. it could be the best £20 you've ever spent
