Is it recommend to release the movers from the tyres once the van is sited ... or is it OK to leave them in contact with theatres for the duration of the stay?
i.e. is there any potential damage to tyres by leaving them in contact whilst on a pitch?
Take them OFF. I have fitted three different makes over time on my caravans and every one of them clearly state in the instructions not to leave them on. First of all it is continually putting strain on the rollers and bearings, and the other it is continually pushing the tyres out of shape.

If I put the van on the drive the night before we go away then I sometimes leave the rollers engaged as I need to turn the van around before I hitch up.
I was told to always take them off, so that's what I do. Makes sense for reasons birdman says.

I leave them off unless I'm actually using them. Just once I left them on for a few days and nights, as I was sited on a steep bank and felt safer for having the extra 'brakes'!

Surely the spring holding them against the wheel will weaken.
Never in five years. Maybe it just depends if you buy a good brand or not.

To be honest with you.
I used to leave mine on when i had the single axle van. That was manual engaged. and never caused damage to springs or the tyre.
Now with the twin axle i take them of so i can place the wheel locks on. Which is Auto engaged.
Thats because i cant be bothered to engage them again lol
I have some friends that have always left them on with no problems at all.
And others as above that take them of.
Springs are just there to help them stay clear of the wheels when disengaged. An over centre arrangement keeps them in place once engaged. Unlikely to become an issue.
Bearings, tyres, driving off with it on are all real issues. But how much? Really does depend on your usage and memory!
Leaving engaged would provide some extra braking, but as there is no lock, they should not be relied upon. I always use wheel chocks and use the handbrake less.
