I've just got a 94 abi dawnstar, there is no leisure battery. I can see the compartment on outside where I would put one, but what is the red and black terminals for inside the caravan cupboard thanks
There shouldn't be any battery terminals inside the caravan as when the battery charges it gives off a gas so needs to be isolated from the interior, that's why there is a sealed locker to accommodate the leisure battery. As there are 2 battery connectors inside a cupboard, the best thing to do is when you have a fully charged leisure battery installed and connected up, get a voltmeter and check the two terminals in the cupboard to see if they are live or not.

The only way you can find that out is to follow the two cables and trace them back to where they come from. If they lead to the battery box (inside the caravan) then they could have been added to connect another battery but it's not just a simple task of connecting a second one in line. I believe there has to be a change over device but the second battery maybe has to be a gel battery but that's a bit too technical for me to offer the correct advice on this. However, you could Google how to connect a second battery in line and you may find out what's required. If you are using electric hook up on site then you only need the one battery providing that the onbaord charger is working effectively and transporting around 14 volts to the battery in the locker compartment.
thanks for that, it does look like it goes to the outside battery terminal, strange that there would be two places for battery but i don't know anything about caravans as only had one for a short time before.
I wish I knew how to add photos on here, two replies on camping and caravan site on fb ( the one with a round tree profile) saying either it had a motor mover, or a water heater, it is a sealed boxe with 2 bolts at top and a black and red wire just hanging to nothing. But it does lead out to battery.
You first picture shoes the red and black wires with spade connectors on the end. These must not be allowed to touch each other. They would connect to something that looks as if it's been removed but what I do not know.
I've asked the chap who sold it to us from a friend to ask him, but not heard back. He did say himself perhaps he had a mover on it before. My husband said he can't see any sign on underneath of caravan that one had been on there, but as we are novices that's just us guessing. Two people have guessed mover, someone said perhaps water heater and others a second battery. Our concern is where did those wires go and what do we do with them as someone above suggested don't let them contact each other. When we buy a leisure battery after we've repaired seals and leak, I don't want to plug it in and something goes wrong. Perhaps we just need get good electrician in . Thanks for replies though to all.
