I have recently had surgery on my spine and will have to use a wheelchair to get around. It is most unlikely that I will be able to walk again, but luckily I can stand to transfer from bed to chair or chair to car etc...
I would welcome any advice or ideas that disabled caravannersmight have to offer. I really don't want to give up my number 1 hobby.
The rear entry Dandys are good for disabled. They are low floor so only a short ramp needed and there is a big clear space inside to manoeuvre a wheel chair, probably 5' x 5'. You will need help to erect it though.
There is a chap in the midlands, Richard somebody I believe, who specialises in converting them.
This will be dandy designer or discovery models as they are the largest rear entry ones.
My main concern would be are you able to get up and down the steps into the caravan? You state you are able to transfer from wheelchair to car, bed to chair etc. and that you are able to stand.
You can get hand rails on certain steps or sometimes bolted on to the caravan, would these help?
Don't be put off, I suffer from spine problems plus arthritis elsewhere and still look forward to going, I also know of a couple who mainly use wheelchairs to get around, and like you are able to stand, and they go caravanning regularly.
There is a small eĺectric step advertised in pr caravan and caravan mag that rises to the caravan floor level, that would solve getting in or out the van,
If your thinking of changing your caravan,I'm sure that Adria do a model that is suitable for wheelchair users, the door is wider then normal and inside is disabled friendly,Venture Caravans will confirm/deny,or someone on this forum may know more.
I am sorry to read about your problem, and hope that you manage to overcome it enough to carry on.
Hi,
Very sorry about your problem, but great respect for your positive attitude.
Some months ago there was a similar post and I found this lift online.
Not sure if the poster got it as they never replied back about it.
I believe it has a hefty price tag but worth a look perhaps.
Very best wishes,
