My family had a caravan for my whole childhood. We loved our holidays touring the country (actually mostly Dorset) and have incredible memories.
I'm now married and have an almost 1year old. We want to give her the same kind of holidays, freedom to run wild in the great outdoors.

Any suggestions for types of tourer caravans? We ideally are after 4berth with probably bunks at one end so she can be a bit seperate at bedtime. Lots seem to have bunks in the middle. It also needs to be quite light. Under 1300kg as we can tow that without doing out towing licence.

Our budget is around 2.5k so only little but we only want basic functional, nothing flashy. Any ideas of good places to look, I've been trying gumtree and preloved etc, but they seem to be full of traders selling ones in the tens of thousands!

So any suggestions on where to find a nice little caravan, and type of caravan suggestions?

Thank you!

We bought ours off ebay. Cost us £500 towards the end of 2013, and we have just come back from a week in Weymouth with it. We have enjoyed some great times with it so far, and are planning many more.

Best time to buy is just before Christmas, as there are some real bargains about. Be very careful though, as you don't always get what you pay for at that end of the market. We looked at several up to £2,000, and some going for that were in worse condition than our £500 one. Ours is certainly not perfect, but everything works, it has everything we want, and there is no noticeable damp.

Check very thoroughly for damp, and don't think that a £2,000 van is automatically going to be better than a £1,000 one. Like anything else, a caravan is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it.

Best Regards,
Colin

Bailey did a Discovery range with a rear single dinette making bunks. Very basic but light van.

We bought ours off ebay as well. Just keep looking. Now is a good time of year to buy as people look to sell at end of season rather than pay for another winter of storage. Don't be afraid to go older than you would a car, many caravans have it comparatively easy and only cover a few hundred miles a year. Don't worry too much about make and model either as long as you're happy inside it. They're pretty much all built on the same chassis and use the same electrical components.

It may be coincidence but we were seeing nicer caravans in private sales - which seemed to have been loved and maintained - than on dealer forecourts, which looked to be whatever pieces of junk that they had been persuaded to take in part-ex.

Thank you everyone. We have a few nice looking ones lined up to go and see. All private, the dealers seem to be very pricey in comparison.

I'm taking a damp meter with me. Anything on the chassis/underneath I should be looking for?

Most of the vans on the market use just a couple of different makes of chassis, and they are usually very reliable. Obviously look for things like repaired damage or serious corrosion, but this is rare these days.

Tyres are well worth looking at. Look to replace any that are more than 5 years old, even if they look fine. They don't do anything like the mileage of car tyres, so wear isn't the biggest problem, they will crack and perish long before they wear out in most cases. Caravans spend a lot of time standing around.

Sogginess or springiness in the floor could mean delamination, but even that is usually repairable. Check that the corner steadies are in good condition and solidly attached. They could have been abused, as some people think they can be used to jack up the caravan. This can cause damage. They should only ever be used to keep the caravan steady when parked.

Colin

Have a close look at the edges of the underside of the floor, where it joins the side walls. Any long term leaks higher up will find their way to the bottom, so any flaky plywood is an indication of a problem.

There is rarely anything wrong with chassis/running gear. Just check the ride height at the wheels is similar and that the tyres are not very close to the top of the wheel boxes. Tyres as mentioned
