I would be in a similar position if I had to make a claim. I have no proof of ownership other than the receipt from the seller, although I did collect it myself from where they had it stored. Also, as my van is older than 1991 it is highly unlikely to be registered with CRIS. I didn't even know about the CRIS scheme when I bought it, as it didn't exist when we had our previous caravan.
Ours is insured with the C&CC insurers, and they didn't ask for any proof of ownership either. I doubt whether many insurers do.
I agree with what macquatic says regarding contacting the ombudsman. This just sounds like an insurer trying to wriggle out of their responsibilities. They accepted your business, and they took your money, all without asking for proof of ownership, so they accepted the risk.
