Sorry if this is already a topic . We are looking at going away towards the end of October in the caravan, with plans of going away further into the winter. Having never used the caravan in winter before, I was just wondering if anyone had any useful tips?
A nice crisp frosty morning with a nice bike ride or walk, just make sure you have a good space heater and plenty of gas (propane) if not on EHU. Be aware that your aquarole can freeze up so a good cover (old blanket) is useful, but if you fill the kettle last thing at night and if frozen, you can still have an early morning cuppa. Rock pegs are good for frozen ground if putting a awning up using a claw hammer to put them in and get them out.
Be prepared for soft ground when the heavy rain melts the snow.
Do not let winter put you off caravanning, you may get the odd tree blocking a road due to high winds, rain, snow and freezing weather, but all good fun.
The water barrel will freeze if temperatures plummet but as ice expands it can crack the water pump or even the barrel in severe cases so it's important to insulate the barrel and feed pipe that connects to the water inlet. Keeping the caravan warm is a must so make sure that if you are using gas as a heating source then make sure you are using Propane as it is operative at temperatures well below freezing whereas Butane will stop functioning at around +3 degrees celsius.
A typical water barrel insulation jacket is shown in the link below.
I like winter caravaning to be honest, and as long as you have protected the water barrel and conection hose all should be ok.
If on hook up heat van with gas first to get temp up, then let the elec take over, to save on gas.
i have onboard water so that isnt a problem.. i do find it getting dark just after 4 pm somewhat limiting though.. plus the gas consumption and battery power needed if you have no hook up goes up massively compared to summer time..
not as i want to put the hardy off.. good luck to them.. he he
We are going away this week end and again at the end of october
But .
I don't really like the dark nights and never know what to do in the evenings . I read crochet and sometimes watch the terrible choice of my OH s TV programs .mbut I hate just sitting in the van .
End of October will be our last trip until Easter . Sadly .
I do love it when it's white frosty or we have had snow at Easter . It's the day nights. Don't like .
I enjoy it, all the spring / summer time 'softies' have gone, so you may have the full run / pitch choice of the site.
Choose a south facing pitch for any possible sunshine, OK the sun's lower this time of year, but every little helps...
Get PLENTY of those dehumidifier trap things too, as you'll be producing a lot more condensation this time of year, you'll have less chance of airing the van to get rid of it, and end up with possible damp / mould patches everywhere...
The obvious tuff like winter clothing / coats etc, and a good selection / change of footwear too....
That's the reason we bought a caravan, so we could use it all year round. If I was only going to camp in the summer months I would have bought another folding camper or a tent.
Aqua rolls not a problem just empty it if it's forecast to freeze or like mentioned previously lag it... just bring the pump inside not worth taking the risk.
Main concern is the weather, don't book your pitch until a few days before ( unless you want to spend xmas and new year away) and keep a close eye on the forecast.
We went to Chatsworth last November on a very icy weekend (although the roads were OK for journey). Caravan was warm and cosy even though the water taps at the site had frozen over. Woke up to snow and the Christmas market at Chatsworth. Definitely doing the same this year. We covered the aquaroll with a blanket and it was fine.
