I've been on narrowboating holidays numerous times since the mid seventies and have always enjoyed it but having an energetic crew makes a huge difference. Over the past years there have been several changes of circumstances whereby family and friends have either divorced, passed on and my wife having a disability makes it impossible to do. Boating is the ultimate pleasurable holiday for me personally but caravanning just happens to be the most suitable as break away from home.
Hope you enjoy your canal cruising holiday and it's a bonus if the weather stays dry because it's a fact that once you have done it once you're sure to want to do it again.

Had our first narrowboat holiday in the late 70s. Have also owned part shares in two narrowboats and also owned two. We were "hooked" from the very start and have travelled much of the system. Unfortunately my wife,s worsening arthritis meant she could no longer operate the locks and she was not confident enough to steer the boat so eventually we gave up narrowboating and went back to caravanning. We certainly miss narrowboating but have found that with caravanning it is much more convenient for travelling further afield, visiting family and friends and getting to places where canals don,t reach.
Although we both still miss boating, we often visit places we first visited by boat and are able to spend more time in these places. As we are now both retired and had intended spending much of our time boating we find our caravanning much more economical when you consider the cost of the boat, insurance, licence and moorings.
Hope you really enjoy your boating holiday and who knows, it could be the first of many.
Had some fun today.A few locks negotiated one was very deep and outflow pushed us into the bank !
A piece of rope with a fender attached got wrapped round the prop but the nice lock keeper helped us and was happy to gain a fender!
Lots of fun and very friendly people giving advice to us novices!
Some nice canalside pubs.
