Followed an Avondale Landranger 640 (big twin-axle beastie) yesterday, it had it`s toilet fresh-water filler flap merrily flapping in the wind-flow. Narrowly missed getting ripped off when passing parked cars, I thought - should I alert the driver of the tow-car?
Anyway, decided I would be wasting my time as the driver of the towcar (an old-shape Nissan Qashqai no less, struggling for power every time he came across a cats-eye in the road) wouldn`t be interested in what was behind him as with no mirror extensions he could neither see what was following him, or down the side of his van. He wouldn`t have seen me flashing him, anyway.
As he couldn`t give a damn, why should I? Maybe several hundred pounds of damage when the flap is ripped off and damages the surrounding area may prompt the driver to invest a few quid on mirrors to be safe/legal? Doubt it, somehow.
I'm going for the happy ending here. After arriving safely at his destination the driver realised he had forgotten to close his toilet hatch but fortunately it was undamaged. It was a better ending to a day that had started badly when after stopping at Tescos he discovered some barsteward had stolen his towing mirrors...

Heavy van for an old? Qashqai, my daughter has had the erly model and the later model and when they were looking to buy a van their tow weight was no where near that of a Landranger 640
I left my water pump hatch open once. Didn't spot it until we were on the motorway but it wasn't causing a problem. Didn't think it worth stopping on the hard shoulder for.
I first noticed it on the motorway so don't think there was enough speed to lift it on normal roads.
Easily done though as take the pump out and just didn't press the cover down. There is no lock. When I looked round the van before leaving it looked normal.
i tried to alert a guy that his big Heki roof light was fully open as he waited at a junction i passed. the old guy looked at me like i was mad.
there is a flap on the side of my van, either the outside socket or the awning heating duct that opens on the motorway even if its closed when i set off.
the quaskai has a very low towing weight like 1200kg. amazes me how people manage to tow (usually twin axle) cravans that are so oversized for their cars. i tow 87% and 400kg below the max weight of my car and its dreadful although it doesnt struggle.

We once left a locker unlocked and it had popped open, a guy came and told us whilst we were sat in a queue, so thankful he did.
The Quashqui does have a low towing weight, we had one a +2 when we were 1st looking for a van and it was surprising how little it could tow even though it was a 2L
that is why we didn`t keep it.
We tried to tell someone they'd lost a big bit of flappy van. Got to our destination to realise it had done some serious damage to our car. Wish we'd followed them!

On my way back home from Melton Mowbray to sunny Norfolk a chap overtook me and flagged me down into a layby to tell me my bathroom window wasn't closed, upon inspection it was closed but the window had delaminated i.e the double glazing had come apart, I was extremely grateful for his warning which had he not warned me could have turned out very badly indeed , for me and anyone who might have got hit
Made an emergency pull in to a tescos today. I had been going down the road, when my towing mirrors fell off and smashed. Luckily, there was an old Qashqai dragging a huge van already there. While he was attending to his toilet flap, i managed to swipe his towing mirrors.
He got to 'keep' his flap, and i replaced my mirrors (im sure he didnt need them). Result all round.
We have seen lots of vans/motorhomes with rooflights open. OK unless the wind whips them off or it rains!
Our battery box came open once but a kind person let me know as we pulled up at traffic lights.
