Several times I've heard and read that garden hoses shouldn't be used to fill or even wash out water containers. Anyone know why?
My hose comes directly off the house supply and is always kept full of water with a non-return valve on the end (except in winter of course) so I can't think that there's a chance of creepy-crawlies getting in.
Reason is garden hose is usually not made from food grade plastic so may leach chemicals into water. This is why water from a cheap container often tastes 'plasticy'. That's the technical reason but I know not if it does you any harm or not.

The plastics used for garden hoses can contain toxic chemicals. The trouble is that the manufacture of the hose is not regulated so you can't be certain what it is made of.
The only way to be certain it's safe is buy food grade hose.
We're brainwashed by the health and safety army now. Funny thing is that when I was growing up (in the '50s) we were exposed to every germ under sun. Now doctors are saying that kids have so many allergies nowadays because they're not exposed to anything.
If standard water hose pipe is not recommended because it is the wrong grade of plastic then why are there so many short lengths connected to the fresh water tap for filling up the Aquaroll?
Surely I would have thought that if there was any type of regulation regarding the supply of fresh water then all commercial campsites etc. would have been advised accordingly by the relative authorities.
True tango, very true.
I got food grade because i get it via work.
but to be honest where do we all store the hose after use? i a locker with dirt spiders etc
makes me smile lol

At 68 years young,I think I've swallowed/eaten every/bug germ around,I use the magic hose or a normal garden hose to fill the aquaroll.
as I drink cold bottled water, the aquaroll water is used in the shower or hot water taps, plus it's boiled for a cuppa
Only time there would be any risk would be if water stays in the hose for any length of time. If water is flowing through the hose with a short residence time as with a short length attached to a tap there is virtually no risk to health.
Generally speaking if UK tap water tastes ok then it is. If you drink water that has been in a non food grade plastic container for a while it will taste like plastic so should not be drunk. Otherwise it's ok.
I doubt if anybody would come to harm by using a garden hose as described by op but it's something some reading this will not be aware of so worth a thread to point out there are differences in plastic & only food grade should come into prolonged contact with drinking water.
