Surely I would have thought that if there was any type of regulation regarding the supply of fresh water then all commercial campsites etc. would have been advised accordingly by the relative authorities.


I really wish sites wouldn't connect those short lengths of pipe to their water taps, food quality grade or not, seen too many people rinsing out containers of all descriptions ( including on a couple of occasions toilet tanks) with the end of the pipe stuck right down inside the waste master or whatever. Prefer just the tap then I can add my own pipe.

The known names of equipment, Aquaroll etc will definitely be food grade plastic but cheaper copies may not be. I got a collapsible water container from £shop that was not. The water tasted 'funny'.

There are various types of food grade plastic. Containers not designed for continuous use will be ok for use as intended but should not be refilled too many times, ie bottled water.

you know the little hose addapter you use to fill up you aqua rolls goes green / black inside and you replace it.
Well i suppose all the other hoses do the same, but as you can't see it, so it dont bother you ?

It's like do you drain all water out the system after every weekend, week away. I do and so do many more.

What about the plastic that your 'van water tanks are made of?

All the plastic in a caravan that comes into contact with drinking water should be food grade plastic. Everything. If you google you will find markings that will indicate if food grade plastic. Items like water tanks should be made of high density polyethylene for example.

I fill my aqua roll with a length of hose, I used to drink from the hose pipe as a child. Never a problem.
I also do not pi$$ about with chemicals in my aquaroll and caravan pipes. I empty the aquarolls and secure the caps so nothing can get in. I drain the caravan water system in winter and close the taps, in spring i just rinse the aquarolls and run some water through the system. Again never a problem

Pretty much the same here, its the chlorine in the water that pulls the chemical, usually the dye, out of the non food grade plastic. In fairness you would have to ingest a fair amount of water for it to do any harm. About as much as a lifetime of drinking water from a household supply fed by PE water pipe.

Always use the proper thing like I do, a length of white plastic waste pipe

All this about the fill pipe. Ever thought about the pipes underground...or even the quality of the water coming out of them - especially abroad!

All tests show that piped water in most of EU has a lower bacterial content than bottled water ... even before you start considering the nastiness of plastic bottles.

I will post a disclaimer first by saying what I am about to say I am assuming applies to most people when setting up on site and their use of water for drinking. And yes there will be exceptions

When most people arrive on site and are setting up, amongst the tasks they will do is connect electricity and fill up a water container of some description. This water container will then be attached to the caravan to supply water to the unit, however from what I have read over many years on here is that the majority do not use this water for drinking, they will instead use bottled water, I'm assuming refilling directly from a drinking water tap when empty, therefore no need for any type of hose. So why worry what hose is filling your water carrier if you don't use it for drinking.

But the hose you use for filling your water container, be it garden or food grade, what do you do with it when you then pack up. I suspect both types in some shape or form are thrown into a storage locker. I suspect no one sterilises it before putting it away and sealing it in an air tight bag. So even if you are using a food grade hose you are still contaminating it with all sorts of nasties in the storage compartment. So does it make that much difference.

And to finish if anyone is really that worried about any of the water that is being used for drinking, then do what every good survival expert will tell you to do, boil it first.
