Does anyone use an oil filled radiator on a long term basis in their caravan or motorhome during the winter?
I have recently read about someone who bought a heater for this purpose and it leaked oil and almost set on fire. Lots of others commented that this had happened to them.
Any experiences on here?

Thanks Opensauce. I have got a new oil filled radiator which has worked well in the past.

Just a bit concerned since I read about one leaking + other peoples experiences, which were not good!

I would never leave a fridge/freezer or dryer switched on in a caravan, even if I had these items!

You hear these 'stories' but you don't know the circumstances. I think probably it's best to chuck any portable electric heater away after 10yrs use.

Hi Anne,
We use oil filled radiators in the house for when we are away for weeks on end in winter .
Never had a worry in five years and quite happy to use one in the van this winter if zero temp is likely.
Someone will always have a horror story about every appliance we use.
As long as the EHU setup is OK, would say, go ahead.
At the end of the day some appliances we have to put our trust in.Everyone trusts their freezer ,because they have too.

yes, but decided a heater, which we already had, sounded like it would do the same job! Also would not have to go to empty the water collection bit in a humidifier.

drying out damp needs a heater and good ventilation.. the ventilation probably being more important than the heater.. maybe a fan blower of some type would be better..

We use one (oil filled radiator}in our conservatory in winter, no problems. It has a frost setting so does not use too much electricity.
As long as they are in good condition ie no rust and wiring sound there should be no issues.
Obvviously do not let them touch anything which could be affected by heat!

I have used one in my previous home in the past, and found it very good. Have no need of it now, and it packed up eventually anyway. It was very old.

In my caravan now I tend to use a small thermostatically controlled convector heater in the cooler evenings. That works just fine too. I don't tend to go winter caravanning anymore though. We are not so young anymore, and tend to use the winter to get any jobs done indoors, like decorating etc.

Thanks everyone for replies.
I left the oilfilled radiator on for 3 weeks. We went back to caravan today and all was fine. The damp wood is drying out and it just kept the cold out!!

Could you vent your dehumidifier (if it's electric?) ours has a hose we run to a bucket but you could run it out of a window?
