Hi. Baily Ranger 550 2005. Problem with Battery not charging, faulty caravan charger ? I tested at the terminal leades when disconnected from the battery, and got a reading of 8.1 . Any ideas folks ?
To check charger connect to battery but do not plug into mains. Check battery voltage, should be 12.5v(ie fully charged)or less. Then plug caravan into mains so charger should be working. Check battery voltage. Should be reading over 13v on charge.
If battery voltage has not increased from first check then charger is not charging for some reason which provided everything else is good then charger is faulty. Replacement caravan transformer/charger unit around £100.
With mains power off:
Reading at terminals 12.52
Reading at leads diconnected from Battery 0
Power on
Terminals 12.52
Leads disconnected 8.2
Which from you advice does indicate the battery charger is not working.
I opened the fuse box - the charger looks pretty easy to slide out and replace.
Do you know if it can be repaired or where I can get a replacement ?
Thanks for your excellent and clear advice.
Probably not worth repairing. Search 'caravan transformer/charger' on ebay or just on google. Your local caravan shop will stock them as well. This sort of thing.
We had a 1999 Ranger on which the charger got damaged by an electricity board fault.
We got an identical new unit from the bailey dealer and I was easily able to unplug the old unit and plug in the new. All the connections were plug in.
