The brakes might have been on slightly or sticking.
I was towing one of our previous vans once when I noticed smoke from van wheel in my mirror.
Stopped to check and found the handbrake was on one click After releasing it and letting it cool it was fine.Oops!
The smoke apeared after about a mile,I would assume if your brake was on a bit you would also see smoke.
It could be they had been misadjusted so over time burnt out, hard one to prove.
I assume you will need new shoes, drums and wheel bearings?
Not nice.

What do you mean by 'burnt out'? Do you mean there is evidence of overheating or just the shoes have worn out? Another possibility is brake lining coming unglued from brake shoe. Did you notice the brakes becoming ineffective &/or noisy as you drove back or is this just your caravan service workshop telling you all this? Without a full description & extent of damage & also make/model & age of caravan, whether single or twin axle & approx overall mileage covered it is difficult to advise further.

The £500 bill if for a single axle caravan sounds like news shoes & drums/bearings + labour, yes? Have you seen the ones that have come off? Are they blackened & burned or do they just appear worn & scored?

Why would Alko do it under warranty on a two year old van.

If there was no burning & shoes were simply worn to metal which would have scored drums requiring replacement drums which include bearings & brake shoes then it is difficult to see how this would be viewed as anything other than wear & tear. This would have been made worse by frequent application of ATC.

Is caravan correctly loaded & balanced with sufficient noseweight? If caravan has a tendancy to snake without any safety devices connected then this could explain it.

What I asked was approx total mileage of caravan from new? If for example you have done 3 return trips to Spain plus other trips then mileage after 3 seasons use might be 9k or more perhaps? If this is the case then really it's just wear & tear.

Any warranty issues are for the supplying dealer & ultimately Luna to decide on. Alko is not directly involved as warranty is from your supplying dealer backed by caravan manufacturer. Manufacturers of the parts that make up the caravan do not directly warranty those parts to caravan buyer.

have they been dismantled and visually inspected for lining wear.. or is it just a long distance guess as to why they stopped working made with no visual inspection to avoid a warranty claim..

i find it hard to believe the linings have worn down to nothing.. or that you could run with the brakes on without noticing.. much heat smoke and smell is generated doing this..

if the ATC could do this there is something wrong with the way its working.. it should rarely come into action..

trog

From what you describe it does appear that the brakes simply wore out & the resulting metal to metal contact damaged the drums. For them to wear out in 3k miles it does sound as if frequent application of ATC could be the cause. If this is the case & nothing is done to investigate this further you will be replacing shoes/drums again in 3k miles.

So you need some cooperation & rapport with your workshop to get to the bottom of this. The obvious cause might be that ATC is constantly deploying to correct a snake. So first of all you need to be certain caravan is correctly loaded with sufficient noseweight, tyre pressures correct & caravan is good match for towcar.

3rd the above.
Its the only way this could happen.
Only way it could be down to alko or a van manufactuer was if it was new straight of forecourt.
Then you may have some come back.
If within the waranty time.

I don't think that ATC can come on without you noticing it. But maybe that's just me.

"until coming down a mountain rd just before Santander" and the one thing peeps have avoided saying is that this can be simply down to "driver error" by overuse of the brakes, instead of changing down gear to slow you down, commonly known as brake fade, if done long enough it would cause this sort of dammge
