Ideally you need a charger such as C-tec which is an electronic charger that can be left connected permanently..This will just keep the battery topped up when it requires it.Aldi and Lidl have these type of chargers on offer from time to time at very good prices, usually under £15

Your charger sounds old and basic, but should work fine for charging this battery, just pay attention to polarity ... it probably has one red wire or crocodile clip, and that needs to go to the battery terminal marked '+'
It is unlikely to be a suitable charger to leave connected permanently, so just use it for a few hours every month and that'll be ok.

Thanks both. Either way, that's useful to know.

Ctek's own site has the useful guide to which charger for which battery .... OK, so it's a 12v battery. Does the information I quoted earlier give any indication of how many steps it has, and all the other parameters mentioned here? It would be a pity to get the wrong sort when I do spot one on offer somewhere.
Sorry to be so way-behind here.

Thanks again for help given!

For example, CTEK XC 0.8 - 6V Battery Charger & Conditioner, which appears both to fit the numbers I can find, and isn't the most expensive sort, which gives me hope of finding one cheaper on offer some time. Would this be right?

All you need is a 12 volt smart charger that charges in 4 stages which the one in the link is exactly the same as I have been using for the past six years without any problems.

... Thanks. Sadly they appear to have discontinued this, but it points me more in the right direction!

That battery sounds like a car battery with the CCA figure. CCA = cold cranking amps. (starting your engine during the winter).
Ahh its a dual purpose one. 2 sets of lugs, one to the engine/starter and one to the electrics. So suitable for a campervan also.
I have the CTEK 3600, an older model and its still going well.
MSX3.6 now or something?
Something 3 - 4 amps for tricker charging will be ideal. Something a little bigger if you need more than 3 amp charging. I have larger smart and dumb chargers for that situation.
