Been to look at caravans again today. We don't really want to buy a new (bigger) car so looking at small, light weight vans.
We have a mature 12 year old son, wondering if we buy a 2 berth van, would he be ok in an awning. Although it'll probably end up with us in the awning and him and the dog in the caravan! Lol 😆
Our eldest two have slept in the awning for the last few years (now 14 and 13), we bought a nice spacious bedroom annexe that we hung up in the awning. They enjoyed having their own space. This year we have bought proper annexes to attach to the awning so we'll see how that works out.

My daughters have slept in the awning and in a pup tent since a similar age. They prefer it as they don't get woken up in the morning. Our van is big enough for them to sleep inside so not a problem for winter. If you got a 3 or 4 berth at least you could go all year round and use the outside sleeping option for when it is less cold.
I s'pose it's easier with a couple of kids, they keep each other company. Maybe I'll have to take one of his mates along, or one of us will have to sleep out with him until he gets used to it.
We can't tow much without swapping the car, which we don't really want to do at the moment x
Have you asked him? Whats his view. I think you should be guided by him, otherwise it may not be worth it anyway.
I too have a 12 year old mature son, who has gone from loving the van and now detests it! Nothing to do with where he sleeps, he'd love the sleeping in the awning, just hates camping now and finds it boring.
Whilst we have tried not to let it impact upon us, and still go, the reality is it takes the shine off it....we are considering what to do.
Our grandson used the awning annexe from since he was six.
This was on THSs, not club sites and initially, our daughter in law insisted I slept out there as well.
The second time he came he got his mum to make sure we were told that he wanted to be on his own. He remained very keen for some years to come with us.
Our experience with him and many years earlier with our two sons is camping "works" very much better with boys in their own space. Our boys having each their own pup tents. In all cases it is their space and is best any interference from us was an absolute minimum.
I might be a bit more reticent on club sites or commercials but on THSs we feel we are with people we feel are like minded.
My niece is 8 and sleeps in her own pop up tent in the awning. Lots of soft toys come too! The tent door points towards the camper door which I leave open. I am no further away than if we were in a large tent.
Although I know it's slightly different, as they are not normally on a public site & they are with others, but Cubs and Scouts sleep in a tent without an adult.
