The title may seem a little comical but it's related to a new Hessian backed carpet runner that I recently bought for the caravan. When you walk over the runner mat it creeps over the existing fitted carpet, however, I have searched online and there seems to be numerous cures for moving rugs on smooth surfaces such as laminate flooring and lino etc. but nothing specific regarding rugs on top of carpet pile.
I paid a visit to the local carpet warehouse and asked there for advice and the only solution they had was a sheet at £1.99 per foot but wouldn't guarantee that it would work as it was mainly applied with rugs on smooth surfaces. Obviously there is no refund once it has been cut off but needing 6 feet in length it could be wasted money if it doesn't work.
Last resort is to ask on here to see if anyone has any useful tips as any advice or recommendations would be gratfully appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

We had the same trouble with a couple of rugs indoors and was forever dragging the things back into place even though I had put double sided sticky tape all round the edges of one of them, but now after putting two rows of the sticky tape under one end they seem ( he said hopefully) to be staying in place.

I thought about using double sided sticky tape under the runner but wasn't sure if the tacky strip would bond to the carpet pile or not. At least that's one option I suppose I could try when I go down to the storage site but thanks for your reply anyway.

I bought some of this anti-slip rug underlay and it certainly works. I bought it to go under quite a large doormat on top of the hall carpet and it hasn't budged since. It can be cut to size if you want a runner rather than a rectangle. Stick it on the back of the rug first then trim round the edges with sharp scissors, then lay the rug where you want it. If you don't get it in the right position first time just pull it up and try again...it stays sticky.

Thanks for your reply Bob, I clicked on the link and to support your claim I read a few of the reviews which all claim that it works as well. This is more in line to what I'm looking for.

Just to make it clear having just read one of the reviews myself. Both sides are sticky. One side has a plastic film on it which has to be peeled off. That is a bit fiddly trying to find a corner to start peeling from...a bit like double backed carpet tape. Stick it on the back of the rug first and then peel off the plastic on the exposed side.

I had to laugh at the review I have just seen which gave it one star and said it was rubbish and don't buy it because one side had a plastic film which slipped about all over the place. The buyer had thrown it in the bin

The carpet runner is 24" x 72" (2ft. x 6ft.) which the width of the anti-slip underlay is wide enough (so it can be trimmed down) but the length is too short so wondering if it would actually work by buying two sheets of the underlay at equal length from the middle (36" either way)?

I am not sure if it would work as well if there is a gap between the sheets although if both ends are stuck down then one would think it can't go anywhere in the middle. I was lucky in that my doormat was almost the same size as the sheet in the listing on Amazon. The sheet was just slightly short at each end and just slightly too wide. All I had to do was trim a bit off the width.

I had a non slip runner in my old caravan bought from a caravan accessory shop in 2010 which was a matching green and didn't move at all and was quite hard wearing and easy to clean. It was that good that we went back to the shop a few weeks ago to buy an identical runner to match the colour scheme in my current caravan but they no longer stock this type of runner and that's how we ended up buying the new runner and door mat that we have now. I did hours of searching online for a typical type of runner without any success but today I found a company that sells them which is 26" wide with 3 different lengths which is the exact width between the front seating in the caravan.

The product information states: The Super Hard-Wearing Hall Runner has a surface designed to catch mud, moisture and footprints at the door. The hall runner then cleans easily by shaking or vacuuming. Hard-wearing, easy-care, stain-resistant runner with granular anti-slip backing.
Zooming at the picture it looks exactly the same as my previous runner so decided to buy one as we know for sure it won't creep on top of the existing carpet.

Here

However, I may still buy a sheet of the underlay for a door mat at home which keeps moving on a daily basis so the replies you provided Bob will serve a purpose for at home if not in the caravan.
Thanks for your replies anyway as you have been most helpful.

That only happens with a shag pile carpet Jeff as you know too well.
