hi members, has anyone noticed when looking at caravan or motorhome brochures that when it comes to installing a tv there only seems to be 1 particular brand called
Avtex available , does any one know why ?
Because Avtex tvs are designed specifically for mobile/outdoor living, ie caravans, motorhomes statics and even tents, and are built to withstand vibration and variations in temperature.

Not all portable TV's can be operated by both 240 volt mains and 12 volt battery power but the Brand Avtex are designed specifically to be used by either method. Some other small branded televisions are compatible for both power sources but very limited and one in specific is one manufactured by Alba which is a combi (TV/DVD) which I bought in 2010 for about a third of the price. The Avtex will most likely come with a 12 volt power lead too which was excluded with the Alba but managed to get one from Maplins for about a tenner.
Toshiba 19" Tv/Dvd combi under £100 and been using in the caravan for 4 years. We don't need the 12v option so would be a waste to pay for it.
Stored in padded Tv bag in the caravan when not being used.No issues.

19" TV/DVD Combo from Tesco, when travelling is on the floor between cushions, in winter stays in the van. No issues, like Vangoman we do not need the 12v option. If I did all I would do is go to Maplins and buy myself a converter.

For several years we had a Toshiba 19 inch combi, in fact its still sitting in our spare bedroom! Superb picture. However when we moved to a motor home we wanted a TV with a built in satellite receiver so went for the Avtex 21.5 inch combi TV. Again superb quality picture. I think the point here is that if you are always going to be on 230v mains then any TV will do the job but when it becomes more complicated you need to look at other options.
I addition to the reasons already mentioned, Avtex have built in Freeview, Freesat and DVD player. This means no other boxes/wiring are required and therefore there is a weight saving too. These TVs also have a wide viewing angle which some of the cheapos don't, and there is a USB port to allow recording to/playback from memory stick

Have to agree with you there, the more complicated your viewing becomes, the more expensive it can become.
I just like to keep it simple when on holiday with Tv or Dvd being my choices.
I have my combi wall mounted and wiring all hidden in a conduit inside the wardrobe,no wires to trip over and set up within minutes.
We all want different things.

Cheap TVs do not have a good viewing angle. This is most important in the cramped conditions of a caravan/motorhome.
for the last 2 years we have used a standard 19" Sony TV which has a brilliant picture from very wide angles. Built in freeview and consumes only 18W at 230Vac.
When camping off grid, I use a 300W invertor.
Haven't used EHU for the last two years either, not at £5 a night anyway :)
60W solar panel provides all I want.

We have the Avtex 22 inch TV DVD combination with the built in satellite receiver, superb TV and well worth the extra money.
We are on our fourth Avetex in 4 years. The first one was exchanged within a month due to the reflection on the screen. The second one after several months would cut off for a split second or two. The third one went totally dead after about 5 months usage. Currently on our fourth one.
Brilliant picture however sound can be an issue, but the sound issue now applies to any flat screen TV. No issue with Avtex support who have been brilliant as the TV has a 3 year warranty.

I admire your patience, after the second one went on the blink I would have been trying for a refund.

We've got a Bush 12/240v, 24", with built in DVD player and Freeview. Had it about 3 years, no problems at all, we use it on 12v quite often. Cost £99 from Argos Clearance shop.
