just bought a new to us caravan privately ,a nice swift challenger se in lovely condition inside and out ..been checking it for the last few days front to back to ensure its as good as it looks .
started on the electrics today alerted by the fact the 7 pin black plug had tape around it ,found it had suffered water ingress and replaced the plug ,then looking at the grey one it to looks dodgy so just about to replace that to ,BUT while doing the job i thought i would check the tow hitch plates (alko) and was dumbfounded to find grease all over my finger ,grrrrrrrrrr have now cleaned tow hitch ,and also our alko tow ball and the lowball cover ,.the mind does sometimes totally boggle though
It's quite easy to miss a lot of things when buying another caravan. We took ours out for 3 days and went over it with a toothcomb to check everything whilst under warranty and glad I did as I detected 6 faults. It went back to the dealer and all was rectified but after going out in the caravan for a week recently it was found that the top washroom door hinge pin was missing so the door was only being supported by 2 lower hinges instead of 3. As the warranty has now terminated I tried obtaining one yesterday from a big camping outlet only to be told that these double cranked hinges are now obsolete so they were unable to order one for me. Luckily I have been able to get a brand new hinge from a caravan dealer in Yorkshire which I've ordered today by phone so that's on it's way to me and should receive it after thew bank holiday next week.
How I missed a defective door hinge I'll never know but I only detected it because I could hear a small clonking noise in the early hours when walking towards the loo and finally pinppointed the fault at the washroom door but it just proves that although you think that you have checked everything there's always the possibility you missed something you can't visually see.

just done the grey plug as well ,found it was fused and melted the plastic in places .now re-wired as per diagrams .will have to wait for our first run to test it properly .
Hardly a deal breaker on a private sale that was presumably well under trade retail? If you buy private expect to do some work & what you have done don't sound much.

oh no definitely not ,expected to be doing bits and bobs anyway .and after hearing some of the tales of woe from from buyers of new ones i,m more than happy with the deal we got on ours .
the last thing we have checked has been the awning ,need a new set of ladders for that and the roof section looks like its been rolled in mud prior to putting away ,so will wait for a calmer day and put it up and hose it down .but worth the effort again as its a bradcot classic with the easy erect ali poles
having done the round of every dealer within a 50 mile radius and even one 80 miles away ,i know we are around 3k in pocket so minor problems are easy peasy .
