The above link is to the Press and Journal newspaper. A stretch of coastal road will be closed due to transporting shipments of nuclear waste (approx 11 months). To see the full report in the newspaper just copy and paste the link in your browser bar.

We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

May I suggest you also put this in the motor homes section and in the Camping and caravan parks section? Non-caravanners might not read the caravan bit of the site.

i was talking to a guy in large motor home a few days back.. he was doing the N/W 500 route and lived in Wick.. we were on the isle of Mull.. i was kind of surprised that it had cost him £1200 quid to hire the vehicle for eleven days.. it makes my crappy old caravan somewhat good value for money.. he he

we got to talking about cheap ferry fares which was the the only reason i had nipped over to Mull and how the local road infrastructure was not able to cope with the extra tourist traffic generated by the widely advertised N/W 500 and the cheaper ferry fares..

Mull seemed particularly bad.. i drove more than forty miles along some pretty atrocious pot holed roads.. before i found a space where i could pull over and stop..

Trog, then pity those of us who live here! The subject of Mull's roads has come up at Community Council meetings virtually every month for decades.

Yes, most of our roads are only tarmacked over farm tracks, some built on peat bogs, and were intended for horse and cart. Argyll & Bute Council have found some more money to try and help Mull's roads following the massive influx of visitors that RET fares have brought over but you are right, our roads cannot cope with the numbers involved. The situation is not helped by a certain number of visitors being ignorant of the rules of driving on single track roads. As for places to stop, well, as you've been over here, you'll know (and obviously didn't do it) you can't park up in passing places. Landowners have provided spaces to pull off but sadly, these are being abused and we know one is being shut.

It's like an eternal triangle. For some businesses, no tourists so no income so can't pay taxes so less money for roads, etc., versus overloaded with visitors with an infrastructure that can't keep up. Mull folks were warning way before RET came in of the implications on the island. There are moves afoot which may allow some of the additional monies coming onto the island to be ring-fenced for island infrastructure, but not holding my breath!
