Trog, then pity those of us who live here! The subject of Mull's roads has come up at Community Council meetings virtually every month for decades.
Yes, most of our roads are only tarmacked over farm tracks, some built on peat bogs, and were intended for horse and cart. Argyll & Bute Council have found some more money to try and help Mull's roads following the massive influx of visitors that RET fares have brought over but you are right, our roads cannot cope with the numbers involved. The situation is not helped by a certain number of visitors being ignorant of the rules of driving on single track roads. As for places to stop, well, as you've been over here, you'll know (and obviously didn't do it) you can't park up in passing places. Landowners have provided spaces to pull off but sadly, these are being abused and we know one is being shut.
It's like an eternal triangle. For some businesses, no tourists so no income so can't pay taxes so less money for roads, etc., versus overloaded with visitors with an infrastructure that can't keep up. Mull folks were warning way before RET came in of the implications on the island. There are moves afoot which may allow some of the additional monies coming onto the island to be ring-fenced for island infrastructure, but not holding my breath!
