Hello , thinking about travelling from Teesside down to Torrington in Devon in our small 2 berth caravan, has anyone done this route before and if so which way is best Once off the M5,
getting on the A361 - A39 then coming back on ourselves A386,
or A361- A3072_A377-A3072-A386, not done this end before and unsure , also would I be best setting off late on a night ? Have heard whispers that "our so and so get stuck for hours on one road down there !!!" thanks for any advice

The M5 has lots of bottlenecks south of Bristol and is frequently at a standstill, so I'd be tempted to travel either late at night or very early morning. Peak times are changeover days, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Can't help with the other roads I'm afraid.

Just be aware that if you go via Barnstaple it will be busy from the port moor roundabout to the roundswell roundabout with holiday traffic mid morning.

Also if you need cash I would advise you do it before Torrington as the last cash point closed recently and the local shops are limiting cash back.

If you don't get too sleepy I recommend a very early morning start to beat the traffic around the M5 and A30. These are particularly busy roads on Fridays/Saturdays due to them being the most popular changeover days at holiday accommodation.

We went to Newquay area last week arriving 8am, and left at 8am today to come home. It was a clear run both ways.. today however the opposite carriageway of M5 around Bristol Was gridlocked coming back with all the holiday makers going west.

We go from Milton Keynes to near megavissey in Cornwall and leave at approximately 2 to 3 am and are down there just gone 8am. Lovely cool drive if it is hot (for a change) and not held up by much traffic even on M5.

Definitely leave early morn, been doing this for years and we go further down than you are going.

You may have heard that 4 people have been killed in two days on the North Devon Link road, today a mother and her two children were sadly killed.

Please take care on that road, especially this time of the year, and do not drive it tired.

Take care and have a great time.
