Just been in Northern Spain and the Pyrenees for 4+ weeks in our small caravan and had a real problem towards the end of the 4+ weeks with very damp bedding.

We use two man-made fibre duvets with poly-cotton covers (one as a base and one for the top of our bed).

Most of the time it was hot and sunny but it was humid. We tried airing the bedding outside in the hot sun every day, which dried the duvet covers, but it all continued to get more-n-more damp!

We have camped for years and used a Trailer Tent and a MotorHome for a couple of years with never a problem.

In the heat we needed the caravan windows open most of the time.

Any suggestions what caused the damp bedding and how to avoid it?

Condensation, do you have the windows open at night?

Your breathing out warm moist air and that collects during the night.

Are the windows or surfaces damp also?

Tent will have had more airflow and the motorhome may have been bigger or had better ventilation.

Are the fridge vents clear and the vents in the caravan floor clear?

You need some ventilation or a throughflow of air.

Hi Grampian91,
Condensation, do you have the windows open at night? = Yes, it was really hot weather!

Are the windows or surfaces damp also? = No!

Are the fridge vents clear and the vents in the caravan floor clear? =Yes!

You need some ventilation or a throughflow of air. =
So, yes, lots of throughflow ... some nights we even needed to use a fan!

Hence why I'm baffled.

Don't you think that the 2 man made fibre quilts may be the problem?

You said it was very hot. Were 2 quilts too much? Maybe a thin sheet under and a thin breathable layer on top. I've just bought a 4.5 tog duvet to use in our camper in the UK. If it was hot abroad I'd have nothing on at all!

Hi,
No, I don't think so.

We didn't have 2 quilts/duvets on top of us in the heat!

Both are 4 tog ... one for the bed base (our bed is set up from the seating cushions and needs something as a 'mattress' to even out the cushions) and it would be hard to use just a sheet as a base = difficult to tuck in so it would just ruck up!
The other 4 tog is for the top = not used if too hot but needed when the temperature drops in the early hours!

And why would that make them damp? We might get a bit hot-n-sticky but not that much!

I just wondered if the man made fibre would make things worse, not very breathable. I think that we all sweat a lot more than we think especially in hot humid conditions.

Being a woman in her late 40s I can tell you all about night sweats!

Hi,

Trouble with non man-made duvets is they hold damp more. If you look at other forums re: 'damp bedding in Winter' everyone suggests going back to your old polyester sleeping bags is the best solution!

Seems from the lack of replies/info' that this might be a rare problem ... and hopefully may not occur again!

We have a double sized sleeping bag, her side is zipped up most of the way but my side is usually 3/4 open if not fully open.

I like to stay cool, i get migraines if im too hot during the night.
