I'm sure this has been talked about before but I can't find the answer in the search facility.

How do you sterilise the water tank and pipes with a mains water hose direct into the caravan.

We have received an email from the seasonal pitch we are about to go onto regarding legionaise disease they got from their council.

Never thought about this before.

What ever you do do not use Milton as it is corrosive. And does not get rid of Bio film which is food for bugs that make you ill. Usually find it has a slimey feel to it on your pipe etc. I believe they are called aqua tabs. Pop them in the aquaroll and drawing it through in to your pipework for a few hours or what they say on the packet. Then flush it through. The armed forces use them all the time. I dont like the idea of a mains water hose as these are not food safe and come with their own problems. If your van has a filter you may need to remove it as it may react with the Aqua tabs

Chalkie0456 is right with their comments regarding Milton but the Aqua Tabs only sterilse the water in the barrel which is pointless if the pipes haven't been treated first. The product you need is 'Puriclean' (Aqua Tabs are made by the same company) which kills any bacteria plus the Bio-film that clings to the plastic surface of the pipes. It's a white powder which one teaspoon treats about 10 litres of water.

Puriclean

I fill the barrels and pop the puriclean in or similar, Roll it around for an hour or so whilst cleaning the van.

Then remove the water filter and take the insides out, then refit the empty filter. Pump the water from the barrels through the taps letting it sit for 15 minutes then run the pump a bit more letting the water sit in the system for at least an hour also.

Because i have 2 barrels i can switch the pump on every now and then to help flush it through.

Drain it and them fluch through with clean water and then fit a new filter.

You are spot on Tango55 - Silly old bugger I got it mixed up. Mind you Elddis fitted a filter and am scared to take it out as it kept leaking from new. When I asked the service centre to replace they wanted £50+. I said I will do it myself.

I use a standard garden hose ... flushed through before use ... stopped at both ends for winter storage ... and puriclean to sort the system out at start of the hol.

Use Puriclean then but replace the filter after using not before.

The reason garden type hose is not recommended for this type of job is because of the danger of carcinogenic chemicals leaching out of the material and into your water supply. Puriclean or similar might sterilise the hose but they won't remove the potential danger. Your choice though.

Leaching takes ages!

If you flush the hose through, then fill the tank using the hose, you will get cleaner and less contaminated water than any plastic bottle that sits around supermarkets for days!

Corni, i would remove the filter, The sterilising solution will get absorbed by the filter and it wont taste nice for a very long time and if it absorbs all the sterilising solutiuon then all the pipes maybe still contaminated.

What filter? The round clear one fitted on the outside? You can special tools to remove them. Or 2 wide blade pliers or similar. Dont just put one in the middle.

Use at least 2 pairs to spread the load.

How go you know if you have a filter. I have looked in the manual but doesn't say a lot. We have a Sprite major 4.
