As suspected your using two non compatible components ,for a standard non stabilised hitch you need a normal short 50mm towball which should also be liberally greased ,both towball and hitch .
If you had a alko type hitch it's a longer slimmer necked towball that's needed and should have the paint cleaned off before use and NEVER have any grease applied to either towball or hitch
So it's just lack of basic knowledge that has caused this and can be sorted out by simply changing your towball to a standard short necked one
