HI, Quick question. We're taking the caravan to france in a few days. I have insurance for both in france. I have breakdown cover for the car in europe, but caravan breakdown cover only in the UK. We driving 3 hours down a motorway pitching up and then 3 hours back again at the end of the holiday when in france and its £100 for caravan breakdown over so I intend to drive without breakdown cover for the caravan. If something did go wrong with the caravan, how do you call for french assistance ? ( My wife speaks fluent french). If the car breaks/has accident whilst pulling the caravan we're covered, so its only if the caravan breaks we'd have an issue.

Just taken out breakdown cover (for car only- not towing anything on this occasion). RAC said if you break down on the motorway in France you need to use their roadside emergency phone. I have a contact number for the RAC otherwise. They did say that you often have to pay upfront charges. I imagine that if you're not on a motorway you'd have to ring an independent breakdown recovery garage, in the same way you do here. Potentially expensive...

You do have to pay for recovery off the motorway, then if you had insurance they will reimburse. Believe it's nearly a couple of hundred Euros for motorway removal.

thanks. I guess I'm willing to risk the expense of paying for motorway removal and breakdown cover for a 6 hour trip, given we're covered for everything else and its very unlikely to happen. But if it did happen, who do you ring ? Do you just google local breakdown services ?

This is something ive never thought about. I'm also with the RAC for EU 'car' breakdown, but no idea about the caravan. Anyone know if this would be separate cover?

It is a separate cover. I have European assistance free with my car, it covers the car and caravan if the car breaks down, but not the caravan if just the caravan breaks. I have separate caravan cover with green flag ( Mayday I think from back when I was in the CMHC) but its UK only. Standard RAC cover is probably the same.

I figure a caravan is a metal box with wheels, there's not a lot can go wrong. But flat tyre, blow out, brakes ceasing you never know. I at least want to know what to do if it does happen

Apparently theres 180 days EU cover for the caravan breaking down/being whacked through the C&CC insurance policy. So personally, i'm sorted.

I would look at your insurance details again Mick S. because I think the 180 day cover abroad is caravan insurance only for damage and theft, not for breakdown, you have to take out separate insurance for that, at home and abroad.
I suggest anyone on this thread should look at the camping and caravanning abroad section as there is masses there on this topic.

I would be surprised if the insurance covered a breakdown with the van.

The policy wording seems to suggest its the car not the van.

You can call your normal breakdown company and they can arrange recovery, but you will be liable for all costs.

RAC class it as commercial recovery. Which is costly.

The problem is some policies have a 10 day period before the service becomes active.

I didnt 'look' at all, i phoned them up. I asked what if someone whacked the van, or a wheel fell off. They said i am covered for 180 days in europe.

Apologies for being pedantic, but is this insurance to rectify the damage caused, or for recovery and repair ?

Thank you Jim, I wasn't going to respond to this anymore as I feel that I am banging my head against a brick wall, there is caravan insurance and then there is caravan breakdown insurance, the same as there is car insurance and there is car breakdown insurance.Just because you have caravan insurance with one of the 2 big clubs (which we are members of both) does not mean you are covered for breakdown you need to pay extra it.

OK, phone call 2 (and thanks for being pedantic!). The C&CC - on further interrogation, tell me that i have to organise/pay to get it back to the UK myself, give them the receipt(s), and minus the excess, they will refund me.

Phone call 3, to the RAC, tell me that as i am covered for 'car and caravan' in europe, they will apply accident/breakdown terms for the caravan as if it was the car. So in a nutshell, they would bring the caravan back if it got damaged (whilst attached to the car) or a wheel fell off.

For you own sake Mick, have the RAC pointed out in which paragraph and page it states this?

You know what they say about a verbal agreement.

If you have camping and caravan "arrival" cover then it covers you for vehicle or caravan breakdown.

If you extend that to Europe then it again covers both.

Breakdowns are covered by the RAC in the UK and whoever their European partners are in whichever country you are in.

However of course check your own policy carefully!!
