Hi all - going to start looking to buy a cheap fixer upper in the next couple of months or so. I know vans have serial numbers etc but do they come with any sort of ownership documents or anything?
I'm going to be looking at cheap private sales and it's just dawned on me that's probably the price bracket the dodgy vans are going to be in.
After 1991/1992 they will/may have a Cris registration document. But its not compulsory so some owners do not change them. Last time i looked it was about £20 to update the registration.
The windows will be etched with the chassis number.

Probably just as many dodgy expensive vans around, as there's more profit in it.
With the "cheapies" there is probably more of a problem with damp than with dodgy "owners". If it's not CRIS registered, and my last one wasn't as it was a 1988 model, then the owner is more likely to be genuine if they are selling it from their home. There are usually plenty around on ebay, or other such sites, and prices tend to be at their lowest just before Christmas.
Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!
If you want an 80s or early 90s cheapie then as stated, worry more about condition than documents. Once caravans get older few new owners bother to re reg them & nobody steals old caravans only new ones.
eBay is your best bet for a cheapie. Look for a private owner who has used the caravan. There are plenty buying & selling old caravans to turn a coin. Even 25 yr old it don't have to be in need of much repair. There are good ones about. Best time to buy will next month onwards. Once season is over there will be less bidders so cheaper prices as most old caravans are sold without reserve.
I am not sure how much you know about caravans but having searched for a starter van for my son I can safely say that you will find a common problem - the dreaded damp. This is the hardest thing to fix. Having said that there are people on here who have done major damp repairs who I am sure will help you. First get a damp meter.Good luck.
Damp will be a factor in most, repairable if you dont mind a bit of diy. As mentioned grab a damp meter of amazon for about £15 and take it with you when viewing, If you find a damp patch you are in a good position to negotiate the price down and fix it yourself later
Vans have serial numbers and a large private company runs the CRIS scheme but I have never registered any of my 3 vans as I felt it a waste of ££.
Check all on board equipment and make sure it works, we bought our latest in the summer and didnt find out till too late the heater doesnt work :(
