Just driven back from Blackpool and stopped at the Rivington services on the M61 for a brief stop. Caravan area clearly marked 80% full of vans and small lorries that shouldn't have been there! Sadly, there is never anyone at these places to enforce the parking of any of the vehicles.
You want to try Wetherby Services on the A1. Nice little man there patrols the caravan/coach parking areas, does not allow anything but the fore mentioned to park up. Watched him the other day slap a £100 ticket on a car parked in a coach spot.

We now try to avoid motorways - there are a few decent lay-byes on major roads. I have started noting them on my map.
For instance - we went to a caravan site near Hull (From Blackpool) a few weeks ago - the M62 was busy but then a major accident blocked the M62 in both directions. We had to take a detour through Bury - (Not easy) Added one hour to our journey time.
we came back via the A59 - MUCH nicer run and about the same distance - the sat nav said it would take us 25 minutes longer but in fact it was quicker - No hold-ups due to accidents. (We stopped for a bacon butty near Harrogate)

Strange but several times, particularly abroad in France or Spain I have felt more comfortable parking the car and caravan in a lorry park rather than the caravan park especially the picnic area caravan sections. I wouldn't do this if the lorry parks were overly busy but if we are just popping in for a quick bite or coffee, toilet relief or just to stretch our legs. From a security point of view I'd rather be where there are lorry drivers around rather than in the picnic area 300 yards from anyone else.
