Putting the caravan away for winter and I'm wondering if I should cover the ground with any sheet or material. It currently sits on Grass which has died underneath so is in effect a dirt pitch with grass and weeds that can reach the floor. I intend to cut these down as low as possible today and cover the unit with a storage cover. Should I be considering a waterproof or breathable barrier on the ground or not? Last spring the weeds had grown to the floor near to the vents. We use moisture traps inside too. Just advice on the ground cover please as I am not able to tarmac or slab due to being located on a storage facility.
You are limited to what you can do in storage. Unless you have standing water under the van I wouldn't bother. Any water should drain through the soil area. If you frequently have water pooling under the van have a word with the storage facility owner asking what can be done or invite suggestions.
As anyone that has used weed barriers in there gardens, weeds will grow through anything, heck Japanese knot weed can grow through concrete.
Just putting a sheet of polythene wont stop the weeds, they will happily punch holes straight through and carry on growing.
Better to spray with some form of weed killer that also kills seeds, that way the weeds should be kept at bay for a few months until the start of nest years season.

We put a large tarp down and park the caravan and FC on it, will this year raise the 'van and FC on stands, takes the weight off the tyres.
We put a tarp on the ground because the grass has died and left bare soil, when it rains the wet sand/earth and grit splash up onto the wheels etc. Making it mucky.
In the winter we cover the 'van and FC with breathable covers, the tarp keeps everything cleaner so less work in the spring.
