Due to the break up of my relationship I'm currently staying in my caravan. I'm thinking of actually living in it as it's a 2009 warm caravan. I'm thinking of issue of car insurance where do you register it register your car etc.
Washing I'd eitjer have to ask my mum nicely or find a laundry.
Do sites allow long term stays?.
Has anyone ever done this ? If so I'd love to hear about it.
In order to live in your caravan you have to pretend you are living at your mum's. To insure anything & have bank account you need a pernanent address. After that you can be on permanent holiday in your caravan. Plenty live in caravans full time & that is the only practical way you can do it, yes it is a bit Micky Mouse so don't broadcast what you are doing.
As for sites by law it's only 28 days then you have to move but you can move between local sites no probs. You might be able to come to a deal with a site or a landowner to let you stay longer though.

That is illegal. You must give your correct legal address where you actually live when insuring a car. Failure to do so can result in your insurance being declared invalid should you try to make a claim. However if you can find a site that offers long term sitting you can use it as your permanent address. Certainly some of our customers have caravan sites as their address

Yes, Micky Mouse as I said. Equally illegal as in contravening planning laws by living in a caravan. It is very difficult to site a touring caravan as your permanent address. Any campsite or landowner who allows you to live in a caravan on their property for more than 28days would be in breach of planning law so I am failing to see how you could legally insure anything if you were not legally living there.
You can only sleep in a caravan parked without planning permission in a household garden if the house & not your caravan is your address. So however you live permanetly in a touring caravan it is going to be Micky Mouse because it cannot be a permanent address so you cannot insure anything or do banking from it.
I'm sure your customers have given their caravan site as their address but god help them if they try to claim because you would not be paying out for reasons I just pointed out to you.
The site rules will not permit permanent living though. If they turn a blind eye to the caravan being lived in as a permanent address then they will be in breach of their planning permission.
It's the same as living in a staic at a holiday park that has to be vacated for 2mnths of the year. That cannot be your permanent residence. To live permanently in a static it needs to be a park home on a residential park. The op wants to live in a touring caravan.
Obviously one can get away with living permanently in a caravan in the circumstances mentioned but using the pitch as a permanent address for insurance & banking will be as dodgy as using the address of a relative as previously mentioned.
many live in motor caravans full time. comfort do a fulltimers vehicle insurance . you can use an adress as a contact address legally for vehicle reg etc . thousands are doing it .
yes council tax is a problem for stopping in one place over 28 days .
you can also register as fulltimer and be on the electoral role as well.

It is not illegal to have an address for post and a different address for where the car is kept over night. The very big issue is insuring the caravan as you are using it as a permanent residence.
If you are lucky enough to find a site that allows touring caravans to stay 12 months of the year it still would not be a good idea to stay on one site for the 12 months. In addition, as you have to pay council tax it complicates things for the site owner so it is always better to move off for at least a month.
We would move off at end of November to return at end of February as no fun moving home in the middle of winter etc.
Must theoetically be possible, but not without considerable difficulties I would imagine. There are loads of people living permanently on boats on my local river, and they seem to survive. Many of them pick up their mail at the local post office where my wife used to work. None of these boats are on proper residential mooring, just tied to the river bank.
Living in your comfortable, warm caravan is illegal, seems to be the British attitude....
No the "Powers That Be" would rather you lived in a grotty, damp flat in the inner City.
Go figure!!!!
Good Luck!

I saw a post somewhere, maybe on this forum, where the family were living in a caravan most of the year and had a twin tub washing machine under their awning. It might be an option.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

A lot of laws seem to be ignored by travellers, and police let them get away with it
They probably don't have much choice. Travellers are often untraceable once they have moved on, and the police are very short on resources anyway. They simply have to prioritise.
