Wow, Again thank you. I think the one alternative I can think of is to hire a car with a tow bar, as there is only two of us +
1 lab/collie. Apart from the VW 1.9 what other car would return good MPG when towing >>>>

Does any one
know of a hire car with tow bar?? Thanks
My local tow bar fitting company hires landrover defenders with tow balls fitted. They are not cheap to hire but they do exist.
A lot of hired transit type vans have a tow bar as builders want to tow equipment.
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

You won't find towing mpg info, other than anecdotal. Instead, just satisfy yourself that you are happy with the usual car manufacturer quoted mpgs. As a very rough guide, expect fuel consumption to rise by around 20% when towing, but there a lot of variables that affect fuel consumption.

HAPPY XMAS to u ALL Regards
VW 2.0ltr 140 CR engine, torque 320nm at 1,750 - 2,500rpm and a lot smoother than the 1.9 PD which gets all the torque in a lump at 2,500rpm. I get up to 65mpg solo and depending on road type 33-37mpg towing. My car is a Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 and pulls the 1,318kg mtplm caravan with ease and is very stable. Just 2 of us and a dog.
