I replaced a gas bottle yesterday at the Calor depot and asked about the new lite offering and when it would be available. I was told very unlikely to be 2018 as they’ve just started researching it.
Calor policy now is to only give existing lites to people on a 1 for one basis. Although lites are in the same group as 3 other types of bottle no lites will be given in exchange for these.
Anyone signing a new contract won’t be offered lites.
Expected life in service from a calor point of view is only 2 years compared with 6 for the standard so to calor they’ve been a dead loss.
Evidently the normal ones can be refurbished if they corrode but the lites cannot. Therefore if a lite becomes faulty or fails quality tests it will be withdrawn by calor. This means lites will become more and more scarce over time.
Advice was if you change a lite bottle and there are no lites availability accept the standard but get the fact you submitted a lite marked on the paperwork and retain it as proof for when the new lite solution is available as this will be accepted as evidence you are entitled to a lite. They are not insisting on sight of original contracts
I certainly got my receipt marked as having returned a lite some months ago because I suspected Calor would play this game - despite assurances from the depot.
However, lots of consumers will have accepted a standard cylinder without proof.
We should all seek assurance from Calor by emailing them that they will honour Depot promises.
I have another two lite cylinders which are part full but I won’t part with the empties without proof.
We all paid for the cost of lites production through the higher prices Calor charged us anyway.
If other manufacturers’ cylinders were as widely available, I would drop Calor in a heartbeat. They would probably be cheaper too.
Is there now something called a cube or Kube which is as light as a Calor lite? Who makes it and the cost I'm not sure. I have a couple of full lites so safe at the moment
Calor Cube is butane so no good for winter outdoors. I guess it uses Calor standard 21mm clip fitting or regulator so no reason it could not be used in caravan in summer. The bottle looks the same as French Primagaz Twiny bottle although that uses a 20mm clip fitting.
I wouldnt be holding my breath for any returns of 'lite' any time soon. If they have been proven as liabilities, its because of the make up of the bottle. If they cannot use a 'light' material because it wont stand the pace, whats the point of researching an alternative.
To me , anyone down to a handful of kilos of payload (the weight of a regular bottle) is playing Russian Roulette with the weights they can carry.
The idea was there with Lite, but its been found wanting when push came to shove.
I've switched over to FLOGAS LIGHTS ...formerly BP GASLIGHT. ..
We had 3 calor lites but had to get a 2 refills in November while away off grid and the dealer only had standard bottles. I have kept one even though its empty to swap over when the new ones become available which according to a local Caller main dealer will not be within the next two years
So we swapped over to the FLOGAS LIGHTS
They are fiberglass bottles in a plastic frame which we got from Homebase..
They use a 27mm clip on regulator. Apparently Calor thought they were rubbish when BP introduced them. but lets wait and see what calories come up with.
As we dont use that much gas - just to boost the water heater and for cooking they are ideal..and VERY VERY light compared to a standard calorie bottle.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
