Well, we thought about giving up, the car was costing money in repairs and the van was a 4 berth for 2 of us.
So we changed the car for a more economical choice with the hope it would tow a lightweight van, according to the websites it should do.
I was sceptical and panicky but today we picked the van up and towed home.
Went well, hubby said it felt good, and 32.2 mpg.
Looking forward to weekends away now!
Good to hear, The worst mpg I had towing was with a 1.8 petrol Mondeo, years ago in France 25mpg, I always seemed to be driving into headwinds. The best I've had towing was in the Netherlands with a 2.00 Mondeo tdci when I managed over 40mpg, the hills, wind direction and driving style makes a big difference.Hope you have many happy outings with your new van

I agree on the headwind comment, I was in Cornwall last year and had a headwind for what seemed like three hours or so. My fuel economy dropped like a stone and for a while I considered stopping for a break just so I didn't empty my fuel tank.
