Can you wash caravan curtains, ours a getting a bit mancy, watermarks, mildew. They seem to have a lining on them and are from a 2005 Compass. Just thinking of all the plastic bits attached to the curtain and of course shrinkage. Thanks
One way to get rid of mildew is to soak in diluted white vinegar followed by a hot wash with washing powder, but I think the hot wash would cause shrinkage. Maybe time to renew them? Perhaps try a soak in diluted vinegar then hand wash in luke warm water, could be worth a try?

I do a bit of upholstery and washing very much depends on the type of fabric. Look for a label on the fabric to see what it is made from. If it is all synthetic then a gentle warm wash will not do it any harm but if there are any natural fibres in the fabric, then you might get some shrinkage. I recently made some slip covers for our new caravan to protect the nice new upholstery and I deliberately chose a 100% polyester upholstery fabric so I can take them off and wash them from time to time.
If the curtains are like a Draylon texture then you can use 1001 upholstery cleaner diluted with water (follow instructions on the bottle) and sponge it on with a wet sponge. Leave to dry then use a vacuum cleaner which will make them look cleaner and also leave a refreshing aroma too. However, if you prefer to wash them make sure you only put then on a warm wash around 30 degrees (synthetics) to avoid shrinkage which my wife did on our previous caravan.
Thanks people for the advice, Geoff, gonna give your tips a miss, thinking we might end up smelling of a chip shop, but thanks anyway, Dilly your idea might be the way forward but the caravan is permanently in France and our french is not up to taking curtains to the dry cleaners. Do they have dry cleaners in France? yeah must do but never noticed one. Gonna go with the 1001 idea, if they are still mancy, maybe it is time to renew.
Distilled white vinegar has a widespread use as a cleaning agent, after soaking the washing, rinsing and drying should remove any residual smell. The white vinegar doesn't have a strong a smell as the chippy brown vinegar.Lots of tips for vinegar here Vinegar also you may also find this video useful Here
If they're going to need replacing if they don't wash well, what have you got to lose? I washed all the upholstery in a previous motorhome and the covers off the three piece suite in the house, both said they weren't washable and came up great. I even tumble dried them but I'm not advocating this. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to make new and get cheap fabric so could take the risk. Wash at 30 with biological powder if you decide to give it a go. You could add white vinegar to the wash, no it doesn't make it smell.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.
The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.
I seem to recall self service dry cleaning kiosks at town service stations in France?
I too would take care with washing, if they are lined, the lining might shrink and not the curtain, or the other way round.
The plastic hooks can be removed and washed in a net bag on a 40deg wash, this will freshen up the plastic.
First my apologies to Goeff for taking the mickey out of his post, did not realise the wondrous properties of white vinegar. We washed them in a mixture of white vinegar and bog standard washing powder.
We did this at 30c in a small caravan washing machine. results on the whole was good, one of the curtains had mildew/green mould stains and this was about 80% successful, there are some residual stains, but you have to look really hard to see them.
Thanks for your input.
PS the curtians had a "dry clean" only on them.
I often wondered how you got on. Especially when I saw not only dry cleaning machines in the supermarket car parks in France, but also washing machines. Put the washing on, do your shopping, collect on the way out. Easy peasy!
