I bought a new leisure battery in August 2017 (YUASA 115 AH. and have followed all advice regards looking after it, regular charge etc. However I was puzzled when I checked the battery with a multi-meter and found the charge was reading 11.70 Volt. I recently purchased a Maypole Smart Charger, this gadget pumped the charge up to 13.85 Volt after a 12 hour charge. The problem is I have checked the battery with a multi-meter every day since that 13.85 V charge and have noticed the reading dropping by about 0.02 volts per day. EXAMPLE Monday 13.85V Tuesday 13.83V Wednesday 13.80V and so on! Can anyone tell me does this mean that the battery is faulty,or is this normal.
It sounds like the battery is failing to hold a charge. You have checked it with a multi-meter and took the readings so what you need to do now is take the battery to an auto electrical outlet and request that they do a drop test on it as this will prove if the battery is defective or not.
How long is the warranty you had with the leisure battery and do you still have the receipt?
Was the Maypole charger actually a 'smart' charger or a trickle charger as the trickle charger only charges in milli-amps and doesn't monitor the charge the same as a 'smart' charger does.
Thanks for your help Tango 55 , The Maypole Smart Charger is a MP7428 8 AMP Electronic Smart Charger and is specifically designed to charge leisure batteries. And yes the battery is in warranty and I have still got the receipt. Thanks again.
Thanks saxo1, I had an idea that stored batteries self-discharged over time. What concerned me most was the rate of discharge. As you say 5% a Month seems to be the rate of drop that I am experiencing, so hopefully all is well. Thanks for your help.
