Just been through loads of photos, and it seems we do both, sometimes at the same time.
We tend to go in and then put a breathable groundsheet down, it seems to help against drafts. If the ground is sloping the skirts seem to flip out at the front.

I always fold the skirt inwards because the ladder straps then follow the same angle as the material which not only makes pegging out easier but makes the material more taught and secure. If you fold the skirt outwards then the ladder has to be pegged further away from the material which changes the angle so can make the material less secure in windy conditions.
I agree also with the post above regarding the groundsheet and creepy crawlies but we never use a groundsheet so makes no difference to us in relation to that but a good point Bob.
We have only used the awning we have now once, and the skirts were in, mainly because of where the tie down points were. Our last porch awning had double skirts, so with that one it was in AND out.

Out.
Sorry, sorry......I meant in, have just been going through some photos of our van on various sites, and we are definitely IN. That way rain water does not puddle on the skirts. 😀👍

We seem to be a bit mixed also... having just checked a few photo's
Looks like I need to tidy around the edges ... or maybe it was a windy day when I took the pictures.
Thanks for all your replies - although everyone seems to do it differently
Well, we have skirts in as usual but a new fitted awning carpet - which doesn't appear to go down well with skirts in . . . so will try it out next time.
