Well, we don't use the amenity blocks, and do have fully serviced pitch when we go to France. This doesn't prevent us having a chat with other campers.
There does seem to be drop in the numbers of people who share evenings to chat over a glass of wine and a few "nibbles" though.
I have put this down to two main causes - (1) many seem to retire into their vans/m-homes and watch TV, and (2) some come as a group of two or three vans and restrict themselves to their friends.

The open friendliness has eroded since we first went camping but, if that's how people want it today, then it's entirely up to them.

Yes I agree with this. I spend my working life as a nurse talking to people all day long! It's nice to kick back and not have to talk to anyone I don't want to. We all use our holidays in different ways. Luckily OH is exactly the same

Chatting is ok, but sometimes 'new friends' just dont want to leave.
One bloke came over to chat at a site in France the very minute we got there. We thought he needed some kind of assistance by the speed he came across. He was just an unashamed nosy bugger, and asked more questions than the site owner. Me and my mate couldnt believe someone could be so direct. We basically had to tell him to bugger off while we got set up and would seek him out later with our shoe sizes and blood groups.
He subsequently took umbrage on being shooed off, and blanked all of us for the week we were there. Which was lucky, as everyone said he took pride in finding out as much as poss about everybody else, then spreading the 'news'.

So if it was you in L'houmeau about 4 years ago that came over to quiz the occupants of a caravan and motorhome within ten seconds of them arriving. We told you a right load of b....cks!

My wife and I had very similar one afternoon in Brittany, the nosey ba***rd not only wanted to know everything, but had been everywhere and got all the tee shirts.

I plotted to really pee him off by having a blacker cat whatever the topic. It worked a treat the next time, I just refused to let him win on anything, he only stuck about 15 mins of my total bull 💩 and he never bothered us again. 😀👍

We had one chap come over to us as soon as we got to a site who bold as brass told us he liked our van and walked in for a nose, even opened a cupboard until I let rip at him and sent him packing.

There will always be the pains in the neck - that's life - but we stop short at treating everyone as potential bores.
Spending a few days at one site in northern France, we had a neighbour who came and started chatting. It didn't help that the water tap was on the edge of our pitch, so he was there regularly.
What amused us was that, after a good 15-20 minutes he would say that he hadn't got all day to stand talking.   In the end I did say, "Don't let us keep you." and he wandered off and never really bothered us after that. Message received and understood! - ha, ha.

None of this is our experience at all! We usually tour abroad for 4 weeks or so and would love someone to come and chat to us from time to time. We are on holiday and have oodles of time. Anyway, we usually move on every three or four days or so.

Many Brits are reluctant to even say good morning as we walk past on our way to the wash block. We have no intention of standing chatting unless invited to do so, or met halfway, but a simple pleasantry wouldn't go amiss. Other nationalities seem to be much more outgoing.

We love fully serviced pitches too! With our old van with an external water pump, running out of water was not a big deal but now, with our new van with a ridiculous internal water pump, if we get even the slightest bit of air into the system the pump sounds like someone firing a machine gun under the front seat. As a result, fully serviced pitches are great as we never run out of water and therefore, rarely get air into the system. It doesn't make us anti social, we still greet people on site and if someone stops for a chat, we are happy to have a short exchange of pleasantries. However, one of the reasons I love going away in the caravan is because, as a university lecturer, I spend all week talking to people and therefore, the caravan is a bit of an escape where I can switch off and relax and not talk to anyone I don't want to!
