we are about to change vans, and seeing one in a dealers that seemed fine in pics and they agreed a price for ours we travelled to look it was a fixed bed sprite. when we got there the door was open on the van as all salespersons were busy. we went i to look firstly one of the drawer fronts was broke, the kitchen sink cracked the pull down blind near kitchen was full of grease, so we went away, onwards to a dealers and nothing suitable there. then tues we saw a advert for another van a later version of our swift a 480. ( by this time we had gone off having a fixed bed ) travelled 70 miles, to a small dealers, no salesmen there just someone keeping an eye on stock, he opened the van door but was watching like a hawk, he couldn,t find key to open the lockers so he phoned the owners and he said bring van down for tradein price. so agreed time and date towed van there, straight away hes looking at a few dings low down so i went to inspect the other van only been there a minute and there was a bad crack on rear panel the gel coat was broke and it was cracked enough to let water behind, i went to get the salesman and he said my van was dry and i said i am not having a deal and i showed him he said ho that can be fixed, i said not for me it ain't well its dry inside as its double skinned i said lets go inside in the corner was the shower cubicle and i said how can your damp meter test the wall through plastic and left him. they advertised all vans go through a fine tooth comb inspection, any way i found another 480 but a year younger but one elderly owner from new sericed every year and £3000 cheaper complete with everything just a few minor blemishes inside which i can put right, and the dealers are doing some bits for me. it was worth waiting for. but they would only give basic trade price for our van so i have advertised it on this website and others but if not sold then it will be traded in this coming thurs. its a swift archway woodford 2001. 2 berth

woodman the point is dont believe the dealers how can a van with broken drawer and a cracked kitchen sink be fit for purpose. same as the other when they said a crack could be fixed, but how much water has entered already. at least the last dealer explained the faults before travelling.

it really is a difficult situation. if you buy from a dealer 100 miles away then if you have to make a warrany claim you have to weigh up will the cost of the repair be more than the cost of towing he van back leaving it then returning to colect it 400 miles in total. i had this problem. with a leaking window seal at the front of my coachman.

before we bought the coachman though we went to view a few other caravans. one was a lunar Eclipse at stowford caravans coombe martin, a good 3 hour drive each way. when we arrived it was knocked about inside and looked older than it was. when looking for damp i found a bracket fungus growing under the bunk bed. the floor in that area was so rotten the corner steady had pushed through the floor and was ineffective. i could see light from outside coming through the hole.

when i reported my findings to the sales lady she said "all caravans have a bit of damp", we then looked at an Abby Vogue, it was very nice but had a bucket collecting the drips from the roof light and water marks on the roof panels.

they said they could fixe the lunar up if i wanted....i ran a mile.

beats me why these guys have the nerve to offer rubish like this for sale at top prices.

may coachman was a world away from the other caravans i saw and the bailey ranger it replaced.

When we bought our current van (new) we made the mistake of arranging delivery in March. Come the first service, there was ice and snow on the roads, so we cancelled the service as I wasn't about to tow the van over 30 miles in those conditions. Could not get a new booking inside the time limit laid down in the warranty.
I did manage to get a later service date at a more local dealership, and then ran into problems because they were not "authorised" by the manufacturer of my van.
Got the problem sorted, then asked manufacturer's customer services if I could pay for a service twice in one year to move the services date to July.
Flatly refused! Now, considering the low annual mileage of the average caravan, and my offer to pay a second service about 4 months on, I felt their refusal to help a bit overbearing.
Bertie.

We bought our van at the lawns from a dealer on Worksop. Had warranty work and servicing done at local dealer. Worksop getting on for a 100 miles away!

We have recently had a warranty issue with our new van. We bought it from a dealer who is 50 miles away and really hoped we could get it sorted nearer home. Swift gave us the contact details of dozens of places nearer to where we live who are approved by them for warranty work and I spent a very frustrating morning phoning around them all but not a chance. No one was willing to do the warranty work and despite my very polite enquiries, some where downright rude when I asked. In the end we are having to take it back to the dealer where we bought it so have a 100 mile round trip coming up in the next few weeks.

We have found a dealer closer to home who, if we take the van to them for the first service, will take on any warranty work after that but won't do anything in the first year. I suppose we should have realised that this might be the case but we foolishly assumed that as swift would be paying for any warranty work, anyone who was approved by them would be willing to take on the work as they would be paid for it by swift.
