They used to be great towcars, Mk2 Cortinas. I'm not sure when that 85% thing came in, as I had a Mk2 Cortina and regularly used to tow a large flat-bed trailer with it. The empty trailer weighed as much as the car, and I often had other cars on the trailer, including a broken-down Landrover at one time, which meant that the loaded trailer weighed 3 times the weight of the towcar. It pulled it fine!
My Cortina was a 1500 automatic, and I wasn't sure at first about towing with it so I went to Borg Warner and spoke to one of their engineers. He told me to fit a temperature gauge to the transmission sump, and if it went over a certain temperature, stop and let it cool down for 30 minutes. It never did. I went all over southern England with that car towing a Sprite Musketeer.

Colin
