Over time, severe road shocks (think of our now famous potholes) can cause layer separation within a tyre and which, although visually invisible, can cause early failure whilst under way.
I have just had new tyres fitted to my caravan wheels at the sixth year service, even though they were "visually new" and with no discernible wear of the treads. Although changed at six years old, the date of manufacture showed them to be in their seventh year.
It is reasonable to expect them to have been stored in an environment where deterioration would not occur between manufacture and fitting to a vehicle, but the shorter that time is the better. Perhaps six months would be an ideal maximum.
Bertie.

Not just the age of the tyre.
I started a new job recently with a company car, I inherited a 2014 car as a temporary car. After having the car for a month, the front tyres were looking due for replacement, also, the car was vibrating at 70mph. I had the 2 front tyres replaced and the tyre fitter checked the other tyres, no problem. Driving the car, the vibration at 70mph was still present. Fast forward 3 weeks, driving on a motorway, the vibration suddenly got worse, then my monitor showed rapid pressure loss in a rear wheel. I stopped to look at the wheel, decided to limp a mile off the motorway and use the can of sealant and compressor as there was no spare wheel. The sealant was useless. I limped 2 miles to a tyre bay, they examined the tyre and showed me it had delaminated causing the out of balance and telling me I was lucky not to have had a blowout. On examining the tyre, it still had plenty of tread over the legal limit. They replaced the tyre, checked the delaminated one and believed it was one of the originally factory fitted tyres on the car, 4 years old.
Lessons learned:
Have bought a spare tyre, jack and wheel brace for my wife's car and consigned the compressor and can of sealant to the garage.
I check the tyres thoroughly every week, I now have a new company car but still chech the tyres thoroughly.
The tyre fitter told me that tyres delaminating is quite a common occurrence. Worrying!

Our VW campervan was a conversion, so the van base was fairly new. I think the tyres were new to us at purchase. Two have been replaced a year or so ago, presumably OH and our garage agreed it was necessary.

The week before we went on holiday, OH found one of the tyres flat on our drive, so changed the wheel and took it to the garage, where apparently it was found to be the valve, tyre was replaced.

Went on holiday, drove 1700 miles round France plus another 600 in the UK. 15 miles from home, on the M62, in the lashing rain, just nicely out of the 'no hard shoulder' section, the other tyre blew, offside front. OH pulled over, fortunately the hard shoulder had an extra wide pull in. We prepared to change the wheel, we have a spare, when a Traffic Officer arrived, and very kindly helped. 10 mins later we were on our way.

Our garage man said the tyres should be changed every 7 years regardless of tread, and said that sometimes their suppliers try to sell them tyres that are dated as not being brand new, they always send them back.

When we purchased our other vehicle, OH insisted on having a spare tyre, which cost a lot of money, also the storage spacer in the boot. He can't be doing with this sealant stuff.

When I bought my last car, a 7-seater MPV, it had no spare - just a tin of gunge and a 12-volt inflator. So I bought a proper spare and carried it in the luggage compartment. Always in the way, so at 4-years old I found that by special order the same MPV could be had as a 5-seater with full sized spare, and properly stowed. Went ahead and ordered it, and had it now for over 9 years.
We use Red Pennant for travel cover, and I found out that not having a serviceable spare earned a £100 surcharge if a breakdown service was called out. Glad we didn't find that out the hard way!
Bertie.

Yesterday, the guy on the pitch next to me told me he had a split tyre on the way to his last outing. I asked how old his tyres were, he told me he wasn't sure, they were on the van when he bought it 8 years ago! He doesn't bother getting the van serviced either. Is it just me? or are there some dangerous folk out there putting our lives at risk?

Dave.

I had new tyres fitted to our caravan last year, as the original tyres have a date code on the tyre wall, and advised to renew after 6 years, so I did. The old tyres looked in good shape, but if you have a blow out, and the tyres are old, Will the insurers pay out?

We are on our 3rd set of tyres on out 10 year old van. Mind you we tow a LOT, quite often vast distances. With a twin the tyres scrub the road quite a bit and do wear out. This does not mean tread low but side impact and left/right tread movements. This CAN cause issues.

Please, all look after your tyres - they are a cheap item against a damaged van. Best be safe than sorry.
