Another question about route. We've not visited Portmeirion before, so don't know the roads at all. What is the best route for towing a van from Birmingham to the west coast of Wales?

Would the A5 across the centre of Snowdonia be too hilly?

I wouldn’t rely on a sat nav for routes.
We recently returned from the Netherlands . Previous year we have always either got lost taken wrong turns etc . Most other said the same all got lost . THis year I wrote my own route . It was perfect no problems .

A5 to Corwen then to Bala is the better route for towing. Put Birmingham to portmerion into Google map Search and select route that takes in both Corwen and Bala, much better roads for towing. We use it regularly.

Agree its a good road,you need to watch speed limits! North Wales Police can be pretty keen!
We often drive out that way on a sunny day.Nice scenery.

head for shrewsbury, then welshpool, then Dolgellau then stay on A470 head for portmadog. I live in the area and we use the route when towing no problem going over the pass. the A5 is a long way round and very busy in summer.
