My neighbour was away, in their recently purchased caravan, a couple of weeks ago.
She took the table from the wardrobe, for the first time, and whilst un folding the legs it chopped off a couple of cm of a finger. There was no 'plastic team' at the hospital so the finger could not be saved.

She is really concerned that it could have been one of her children, or it could happen to someone else.
She was wanting Bailey to include a warning sticker on the tables but I think she said Bailey have not replied / responded.
Any one heard of other accidents with caravan tables?
John

Hi John.

The table in a Bailey is no differant to any other make.
I have a Bailey now and the table legs fold the same as the Coachman table we had..
Any folding table could more than likely cause the same accident i am affraid.

Yes, I know that my Lunar table needs care when putting it up. I have told my neighbour it is not just Bailey. On another forum she had found others who have suffered less serious injuries from caravan tables. She wants to try to prevent others getting hurt.

by forcing someone to add a warning to a piece of equipment that, to be fair, most of us know will trap a finger?

"Most" not all. The design is obviously wrong!

I'm sorry to hear that your wife has had such an injury John, I wish her a speedy recovery.
Anything with a scissor action in the mechanism has 'pinch points' and must be treated with caution.

It was my neighbour, a young mother, first time out with their 'new ' van.
I don't think she knew anthing about scissor action and pinch bolts. She was probably putting the table up for their dinner while keeping her eye on her kids when "bang" she lost part of her finger.
What bothers her is that she could have asked her eldest, who is 10 to put the table up and she could have lost the finger.

If a kiddies toy was found to be dangerous...i.e sharp bits or eyes that can be pulled off and swallowed, poisonous paint etc; they would recall it and ban it immediately...but it seems ok for a caravan company to produce a product capable of chopping off a finger and it is suggested that it's just hard luck, they are all like that, and the injured person should have been more careful...mmm...funny old world we live in.

Bailey would probably respond ok to a no win/no fee lawyer. Tell her to go & see one. She might get a few grand out of it.

Is it any wonder we have so many badly designed caravans when people accept such shoddy designs as some in the posts above would indicate?

Those table legs are really dangerous and it does not surprise me someone has been badly hurt with one. I have always disliked putting them up and down. Never mind a sticker, a better one could and should be designed. If someone bought such a dangerous table at Go Outdoors and an accident occurred, it would not take long for all stock to be withdrawn no doubt.

Undoubtedly she should claim off Bailey or more probably the dealer for such an injury. I hope she does, then maybe it will force Bailey to redesign the table and make things better for everyone. Its sad that she has to lose a finger anyway, at least claim and get something back for it.

I don't think there is any chance of comeback. There are so many everyday items that have a potential to cause injury, yet are not regarded as being unsafe. Folding chairs (deck chairs, relaxers, etc) all have the potential to trap fingers the unwary.
We had an incident where a seat of our Swift dinette suddenly gave way whilst a relative was sitting on it. The plastic support for the hinged slats had failed.
Had they been holding a wine glass, the stem would have hit, and stopped at, the table, and her downward travel probably resulted in her face smashing the glass. I advised Swift of the possible dangers from their other vans, and sent them photos by email.
"Thank you for calling", but no response since - and that was over 2 years ago.
Bertie.

She was urged by friends to see a solicitor, which she did and was told there was little chance of a favourable outcome.

is it any wonder that we live in a nanny state when someone hurts themselves the first line of advice is "call a solicitor"

cars are more dangerous than caravan tables, because more people get hurt by cars.

lets ban cars.

no?

didnt think so.
