Now I appreciate that camp sites are run as business and the goal of running a business is to make money. I get the idea that some may charge extra of electric, a serviced pitch and the like because providing these cost money to install. I've stayed on sites who take the view that having paid for a "pitch" it's up to yourself whether or not you erect an awning but feel a bit resentful of those that charge extra and am willing to accept that the extra paid is perhaps compensation for any damage done to the grass. The bit that gets my goat is sites that charge for pets and in particular "dogs!" Now I wouldn't mind paying extra for my dogs if there were a proper exercise area provided with perhaps poop bags to dispose of their mess as well as other facilities such as somewhere you can take them to be washed should the get dirty but these places are few and far between. I feel sites that lack any facilities for your pet yet charge you for you having them in your camper/van are ripping customers off and should be ashamed, in fact they should be named and ashamed. It's dishonest and the next great scam is charges for having bicycles attached to the back of your van.

I agree what you say but there are some dog owners that take advantage when it comes to not charging for dogs because some dog owners have three or four dogs. It may be a better policy if one dog goes free but then some dog owners would consider that as being discrimination of being a pet owner so the only solution is to apply a charge to save any arguments therefore the owners either pay or go to a site where dogs go free.
I'm a dog owner myself with just one dog but when I see at least three dogs on a campsite I usually find that the owner has problems keeping all three under proper control.

If you don't like sites that you have to pay for your dog there a lot you can go to where your dog goes free

We sometimes camp with 4 dogs, I have one and SIL has 3 so that is 2 dogs per pitch, most campsites are happy with that, some charge and some don't.

In the site we use in France, we pay for each dog, and one year we had 5 between us. they have a dog walking area and taps to clean off any mud etc

The dogs are generally good, no excessive barking or running off, the campsite are happy to take more than the 2 allowed because we do not get any complaints about them, in fact lots of admirers, they're all Border Collies, and all different colours, which brings lots of comments.

As above have said, if the dogs have the facilities then I don't see a problem, but if they don't it is money for nothing.

For example, there's one which has a "Pooch parlour" (a wet room and warm shower for dogs) and doesn't charge for dogs or other pets. Norden Farm in Dorset.

I'm in agreement with tango on this, and also an owner of one dog. The number of dogs on sites is getting out of hand with multiple owners having multiple dogs.

So one free, the rest charged for. Whilst its handy having a dog area, I don't see why site owners should acquire either extra land, or give up a revenue producing section, just so people can bring loads of dogs.

The only benefit I can see to charging for dogs is that it might dissuade people from bringing too many with them. I have no objections to well behaved dogs but last week, the lady pitched opposite us had 4 of those teeny weeny fluffy dogs who yipped and growled incessantly as soon as anyone walked past their pitch. As they were on a main thoroughfare, this meant they were incessantly yipping nearly all day. The owner thought this was funny and cute but we were of a different opinion! If there had been a charge for dogs, I doubt she would have been there!

We use a site that has a no pet rule
One caravan club site somebody let there out at six in the morning and there dog do nit on are pitch

I don't think it matters one bit how the cost per night is made up. It is the bottom line cost per night that matters.

It does give you the option to shop around to find a cheaper site for your particular groups make up.

I don't see why campsites charge for dogs. If you rent a cottage that accepts dogs they may have rules like no dogs in the bedrooms or on the furniture but they don't usually charge extra for the dog. Those that do charge extra will say it is for having extra cleaning to do to get rid of dog hairs etc; but what extra do campsites have to do?

If they provide dog walks with poop bags and bins and have to empty those bins then I can understand charging but on most campsites the poop goes straight in the general skip as it does in my dustbin at home.

I don't often think about it but one issue I do have with dogs is that if they have pooped on the pitch and then the next camper comes along and kneels down to hammer in tent pegs or something, they could well be kneeling in the residue of dog poop or pee. I now use knee pads because with a bad back I have to kneel down rather than bend.

Precisely. So, if there was a stink over this charge, the site owner could simply apply a flat inclusive fee and nobody would be any the wiser. The Clubs seem to have their own rules. Private and commercial campsite owners are perfectly entitled to itemise their fees and charge for each item accordingly, and that includes dogs. The prospective visitor then has the choice to either accept the fee (which in itself is a confirmation of being satisfied), or just turn away and find another campsite.

Very true, and I sometimes wonder why campsites don't just charge a flat rate for everything, except perhaps then, the tariff would be so high that campers probably wouldn't even bother going there. Much easier to pretend the tariff is quite cheap and hope the punters don't realise how expensive it is getting when they add up all the add-ons

Continental sites charge per item, including dogs. ACSI sites usually allow one in the inclusive price, but charge for more. We have 2 dogs (whippets) and are usually (although not always) charged an additional fee for 1 when travelling abroad, which we are happy to pay.

I would add (at the risk of upsetting a few people here) that this is a particularly quiet and gentle breed.
