I have read quickly this thread. I can’t see that anyone has mentioned a damp meter. This is essential as the major problem with Caravans is water ingress. There are seals in all sorts of places which can gradually let water in ,even on nearly new Caravans.
I didn't specifically mention using a damp meter, but I did say "Make sure it's not damp". I quite agree, damp is probably the biggest problem when buying any caravan.

a Big Thankyou for taking the time to explain all this to me - makes sense and today im going to lower the electric socket ( its on a hinge behind the back bumper so its out of sight when not in use along with the detachable tow hook ) and ill count the pins. there is defintely only 1 socket and its the Ford towbar fitted from when the car was new back in 2009.
ill buy a damp meter and use that when i go to view caravans.
as an aside to this newbie ...
what do you folks think about renting / hiring a caravan for a week to see how i get on with it?
would it be a useful experience ( it isnt cheap to do! )
just so i get to know the things you find you when your using a caravan - the things that you like, the things you wished you had etc ....
Renting just to try it out sounds like a good idea if you can find somewhere local to rent from, and a reasonable price.
If you have an old, single socket like mine, it will be 7 pin. If it's the newer type it will have 13 pins. My guess is that if your car is a 2009 model (mine's 2007) it will probably be a 7 pin. Only way to confirm is, as you say, to count them.
