Just ordered a new Xplore 422 se at the caravan & motorhome show
We got quite a lot off and free starter pack and motor mover. Now I was going through the info and have seen that I could have got a free weight plate upgrade when I ordered the caravan.
My question is - is it worth me sending an email asking if my order can include this upgrade. Will I need the weight or is it better to leave be.
There are lots of numbers in the brochure not sure what they all mean:
Plated mtplm 1099kg
Max. Mtplm 1200kg
Optional equip payload 22kg
Miro 959kg
Our tow car is an smax so can manage a heavier caravan but will upping it reduce the resale price ??
if its free - go for it ...I wouldn't want to be subject to a weight check..The first thing the examiners do is look at the plate on the van when its been on the weigh bridge.
I dare not think of how much ours weighs when we go away for two weeks...Like Billy Smarts Circus on tour
If you got a motor mover, that will take a chunk out of your caravan payload. You may be better getting the upgrade, all they do is put another mtplm (1,200kg) label on and update the certificate of conformity that you get.
I would agree with most of the other posters' advice and go for the upgrade as 140kg may not be sufficient once it includes your motor mover.
The only advantage of the lower plating would be to keep the maximum permitted weight of car and caravan below 3500kg., but with an S-Max you would need a B+E licence with either weight plate.

is there a legal requirement to have one? On ours the lettering / numbers have worn off after years of vigorous washing
you are supposed to have one but i would not overly worry about it.. without a plate the powers that be would not know what it was supposed to be.. he he
Any caravan can be uplated to the max axle rating which will be stamped under axle somewhere. In op case it will be 1200kg. As pointed out doing that might with some towcars require driver to have B+E licence but caravan can always be downplated again.
I have a xplore 422 ,ordered at the factory show Sept last year and I opted for the plate upgrade as I have a mover fitted and may want a awning in the future. Both these items would take a chunk out of the usable weight that was left
------------- Its like driving with with the hand brake on and a hole in the fuel tank

Hi John
Thanks for this - how are you getting on with your xplore??
I like it a lot, lots of cupboard space (I'm single and caravan on my own)in fact I haven't been able to fill them all yet, easy to tow (I have the ATC system fitted as a belt and braces move)easy to live in too.I'm sure you'll enjoy yours
